Midwest independent recording artist, singer, songwriter, and composer Robert Kramer announces the release of Beyond the Great Divide, a 13-track album years in the making that transforms personal challenges, life-changing experiences, and a lifelong commitment to music into an ambitious and emotionally resonant musical statement.

Blending elements of rock, progressive rock, pop, orchestral textures, and other musical influences, Beyond the Great Divide reflects Kramer's distinctive approach to songwriting and composition. The album explores themes of perseverance, personal transformation, loss, social commentary, and the search for meaning in a world that continually tests the human spirit.

But the story behind the album is every bit as compelling as the music itself.

A Decade In The Making

Originally conceived during the 2016–2017 period, Beyond the Great Divide began with a collection of songs Kramer had accumulated over years of writing and composing. Determined to bring these compositions to life, he assembled a group of accomplished musicians for recording sessions in his home studio.

The initial sessions produced promising results, but financial limitations, scheduling conflicts, and other unforeseen circumstances forced the project into an extended hiatus.

Then, in 2024, just as Kramer was preparing to resume work on the album, a serious automobile accident changed the course of his life. The accident brought months of surgery, rehabilitation, and recovery, forcing him to confront adversity in a profoundly personal way.

Rather than abandon the project, Kramer returned to the music with a renewed understanding of its underlying message.

The title Beyond the Great Divide came to represent something larger than a collection of songs. It became an expression of the challenges people encounter throughout their lives—and the determination required to overcome them.

The album was ultimately completed with the contributions of musicians Kramer came to know through the local music community, bringing the project full circle after years of setbacks and uncertainty. The result is a recording shaped not only by musical ambition but also by the lived experience of its creator.

Thirteen Songs. One Unifying Message.

Across its 13 tracks, Beyond the Great Divide moves through a broad landscape of musical styles, emotions, and ideas. The opening track, “Letting It Go,” establishes the album's reflective tone with a dramatic musical narrative about relinquishing control, confronting isolation, and discovering what truly matters. Its expansive arrangement sets the stage for a record that favors storytelling, dynamic development, and emotional depth.

The title track, “Beyond the Great Divide,” reinforces the album's central theme of moving beyond the obstacles that separate us from the lives we hope to lead.

Other songs explore love, personal conviction, grief, resilience, and the passage of time. Tracks such as “King of Hearts,” “Turns Into Tears,” “Soldier,” “Requiem,” “Son,” and “Full Circle” contribute to an album that moves between intimate reflection and larger, more dramatic musical statements.

The collection closes with “Gonna Be OK,” a title that serves as a fitting expression of hope after the struggles and revelations that precede it. Rather than confining himself to a single musical category, Kramer draws upon a wide range of compositional influences to serve each song's individual character. The album reflects his belief that music should communicate something meaningful, challenge expectations, and connect with listeners on a level that extends beyond entertainment alone.

A Collaborative Effort Rooted In The Midwest

A longtime presence on the Midwest music scene, Kramer has built a career encompassing songwriting, performance, recording, and composition for visual media. His musical background spans keyboards, guitar, vocals, and a variety of styles, from rock and pop to blues, jazz, classical, orchestral, and folk influences.

Over the years, his work has included music placements in film and television, including CBS's The Young and the Restless. He has also collaborated with accomplished musicians, including Napoleon Murphy Brock, the celebrated vocalist and multi-instrumentalist known for his work with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.

Kramer's previous solo releases include Songs of Past Lives (2000), Legacy of Love, and Shadow Logic (2017), each reflecting different dimensions of his musical interests and compositional approach.

With Beyond the Great Divide, Kramer brings these experiences together in a project that emphasizes expressive songwriting, varied musical arrangements, and the contributions of fellow musicians.

The album's development also reflects the importance of independent music communities, where collaboration, personal relationships, and a shared commitment to the creative process can bring ambitious projects to fruition despite significant obstacles.

A Tribute To A Musical Friend

The completion of Beyond the Great Divide carries an additional emotional significance.

Drummer Larry Ortega, who contributed to the album's final recording sessions, passed away in July 2026. His musicianship, energy, humor, and personal warmth left a lasting impression on those who knew and worked with him.

Kramer has dedicated the album to Ortega in recognition of his contribution and in remembrance of the spirit he brought to the music. That dedication adds another dimension to an album already shaped by themes of perseverance, loss, and the enduring connections forged through music.

Beyond The Music

For Kramer, Beyond the Great Divide represents more than the completion of a long-delayed recording project. It is a statement about the creative process itself—and the importance of continuing to pursue meaningful work despite the circumstances life may present.

In an era when music is often consumed in brief, disposable fragments, Kramer offers a project built around developed compositions, musicianship, and ideas that invite listeners to spend time with the music and consider the stories behind it. Sometimes, the most meaningful work emerges from the determination to begin again. With Beyond the Great Divide, Robert Kramer delivers a deeply personal chapter in his ongoing musical journey, inviting listeners to find their own connections within its songs and to consider what it means to move beyond the dividing lines in their own lives.
