Joan and the Giants are back and as strong as ever with their new single ‘Feels Like Heartache’, out Monday, July 8 at 7.30pm AEST.

This Boorloo/ Perth-based indie-pop band has made themselves known for their emotion-packed music and captivating live performances. So far, 2024 has been their biggest year yet, seeing overwhelming support for their two singles, 'Good Time' and 'Born In The Wrong Time', before performing alongside P!NK and Tones and I in Optus Stadium in March. With no hesitation, the band jumped back into the studio to continue raising their own bar on their music.

'Feels Like Heartache' is a gentle change of pace from their previous releases this year, but captures the endearing and unfeigned sentiments that Joan & The Giants are so fondly loved for. This slow, melancholy song spirals into a powerful and painful peak, combining ghostly acoustic guitar with layered vocals with an eventual kick-in of drums to forge an unforgettable buildup and a release of sorrow.

Tracking the path of a doomed romance, this song has a story close to many. It details in gentle prose how it feels to be stuck in a tragic love that hurts no matter what you do, playing on the familiar in a slow sad ballad. Grace Newton-Wordsworth speaks on the track:

Feels like Heartache' is the most deeply personal and honest song we’ve written. It’s  centred around longing for the person you love more than anything but knowing it’s an  addiction and isn’t good for you. Being brutally honest isn’t easy, but honesty to us is a  very important thing, especially in our songwriting.

It's no secret frontwoman Grace Newton-Wordsworth and guitarist Aaron Birch have been creating music together, whilst also being in a relationship for the past 9 years. Despite all the band's highs in 2024, the couple have navigated tougher times in their personal lives. Aaron Birch states :

We wrote this song in the midst of a chaotic storm and it was a cathartic way of saying how we felt about stepping away from each other.

Joan and the Giants share their mourning in a beautiful spiral soundscape in 'Feels Like Heartache', out Monday, July 8 at 7.30pm AEST.
