Carla Aakre, the Helsinki-based singer-songwriter, makes her debut with new single ‘watercolour’, a heartfelt ode to friendship. This track also signals her forthcoming full-length album Things I Forgot to Tell You, a project that dives deep into the corners of Aakre’s mind, leading listeners through scenes of longing, doubt, and delight, in an organic blend of alt-folk and indie-pop, with a dash of indie-rock undertones.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind ‘watercolour’, Carla Aakre shares, “‘watercolour’ is an ode to friendship. Sometimes you need someone to remind you of the beauty around you. With the help of friendship, even in difficult moments, you can find something you want to cherish.”

This single beautifully encapsulates the power of connection and the way friendships can illuminate even the darkest times. It’s a showcase of Aakre's ability to observe and reflect on the world around her, finding beauty in the finite moments of life. Her captivating storytelling draws from memories, desires, and self-reflection.

Set against a backdrop of steady drum and noodling strings, Aakre unravels her intimate world with a distinct vocal that balances fragility and power. This confessional style is reminiscent of early Angel Olsen or the quieter Julia Jacklin tracks, denoting a sound that is as self-possessed and as it is relatable.

Written and composed in Clara Aakre’s studio flat in Helsinki and at her family’s cottage in southern Finland, ‘watercolour’ is imbued with the warmth and intimacy of these personal spaces. Collaborating with producer and mixer Roni Ylhäinen, the track was influenced by the analog sound, recorded on an 8-track multitracker.

The final touches were brought to life with the help of Aakre’s sister, Milla Käyhty, who led the string and horn arrangements. With her debut album, Things I Forgot to Tell You (due out February 2025 via Kieku Records), on the horizon this carefully painted ‘watercolour’ is a sign of things to come.

In Finland, Kieku ja Kaiku is a popular cartoon from the 1950s, starring two chickens sowing mischief across their forrest land. Their names are onomatopoeias for the rooster’s crow—cock-a-doodle-doo, loud, brash, and eye-opening. Finland’s KIEKU RECORDS takes its name from these unofficial mascots, borrowing from childhood nostalgia but also carrying an important message. It’s time for the music industry to wake up.
