Early Life and Musical Awakening
Vishal Mishra was born on 8 December 1990 in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, and spent his formative years in Lucknow. Music was not a formal pursuit in his household; he taught himself by listening obsessively to a wide spectrum — Indian classical, Western rock, film soundtracks — and picked up instruments out of necessity when he could not afford session musicians for his early compositions. By his own account, he plays roughly seventeen instruments, including vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, harmonium, tabla, piano, and keyboard. Before committing to music full-time, Mishra studied law, a path he abandoned after television exposure redirected his trajectory.
Reality Television and Mentorship
Mishra's first public platform was the DD National reality show Bharat Ki Shaan – Singing Star (season 3), where he won and gained industry visibility. He subsequently auditioned for Indian Idol but was disqualified, an experience he has cited as a low point that sharpened his resolve. The turning point came through Lalit Pandit, one half of the celebrated Jatin–Lalit composer duo, who took Mishra under his wing. Pandit's mentorship provided technical guidance and, crucially, access to early film opportunities — notably the 2016 Shorgul track "Shaam O Seher," where Pandit served as composer and Mishra as singer.
Composing Debut and Early Film Work (2016–2018)
Mishra made his debut as a music director with the Tamil film Devi (2016), directed by A. L. Vijay and simultaneously shot in Telugu as Abhinetri and Hindi as Tutak Tutak Tutiya. The soundtrack included "Chalte Chalte" (sung by Arijit Singh) and "Ranga Re" (Shreya Ghoshal). In 2017, he composed "Jaane De" for Qarib Qarib Singlle — a melancholic ballad rendered by Atif Aslam that announced his melodic sensibility to a national audience. That same year, Munna Michael marked his playback singing debut with "Pyar Ho" (duet with Sunidhi Chauhan), and he scored the Marathi film FU: Friendship Unlimited, contributing multiple tracks as singer and composer.
The Salman Khan Connection and Solo Breakthrough (2018–2019)
Salman Khan's involvement elevated Mishra's profile in 2018. Khan appeared in the music video for the "Rafta Rafta" medley (Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se) and entrusted Mishra with "Selfish" for Race 3, a rare instance of Khan writing lyrics for a film song. Mishra also composed the title track of Veere Di Wedding. The definitive breakthrough arrived in 2019 with two solo-composed soundtracks: Notebook (produced by Khan) and Saand Ki Aankh (produced by Anurag Kashyap). Notebook's "Nai Lagda" and "Safar" showcased his ability to craft full albums, while Saand Ki Aankh's folk-inflected songs — "Udta Teetar," "Womaniya," "Aasmaa" — demonstrated versatility. But it was "Kaise Hua" from Kabir Singh, written by Manoj Muntashir and sung by Mishra himself, that became a generational anthem, topping charts for months and earning the soundtrack the Filmfare Award for Best Music Album (shared with Mithoon, Amaal Mallik, Sachet–Parampara, and Akhil Sachdeva) and a Screen Award for Best Music.
Pandemic Anthems and Pan-Indian Expansion (2020–2022)
The COVID-19 lockdown prompted Mishra to release "Manjha" (2020), a gentle romantic single featuring Aayush Sharma and Saiee Manjrekar, followed by the collaborative anthem "Phir Muskurayega India," which united Bollywood stars including Akshay Kumar and Jackky Bhagnani in a message of resilience. He scored the Disney+ Hotstar series Broken But Beautiful (seasons 2 and 3), contributing the recurring theme "Teri Hogaiyaan." The period also saw Mishra expand southward: he sang "Naacho Naacho" for S. S. Rajamouli's RRR (composed by M. M. Keeravani, 2022), "Chola Chola" for Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: I (composed by A. R. Rahman, 2022), and "Sun Aye Mili" for Mili (composed by A. R. Rahman, 2022). These collaborations with Rahman and Keeravani signaled his acceptance in the upper echelon of Indian film music.
Animal, Stree 2, and the Independent Album (2023–2026)
2023 brought "Pehle Bhi Main" for Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal — a haunting, guitar-driven ballad that became Mishra's second career-defining hit after "Kaise Hua." The song, lyricized by Raj Shekhar, topped streaming charts for weeks and contributed to Animal's sweep of the Filmfare Award for Best Music Album in 2024 (shared with Pritam, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Jaani, Bhupinder Babbal, Ashim Kemson, Harshwardhan Rameshwar, and Gurinder Seagal). In 2024, "Khoobsurat" for Stree 2 (composed by Sachin–Jigar, lyricized by Amitabh Bhattacharya) and "Chal Tere Ishq Mein" for Gadar 2 (composed by Mithoon) further cemented his status as a go-to romantic voice.
After years of film assignments, Mishra realized a long-held ambition with Pagalpan, his debut independent album, released 12 February 2026 via T-Series. The 16-track project took two and a half years and features international collaborators: Portuguese artist Maro on "Bekhabar," Spanish singer María José Llergo on "Khayalo Se Aage," Judit Neddermann and Ferran Savall on "Koi Nahi Hai," Vernat on "Roya," Kashmiri songwriter Duha Shah on "Jeene Ki Wajah," and Indian pop artist Hansika Pareek. Mishra told Rolling Stone India the album emerged from "a very restless place" and represents "the most personal expression of my life." A North American tour (New Jersey, Toronto) followed in June–July 2026.
Artistry and Musical Language
Mishra's sound is anchored in a hybrid vocabulary: Indian folk percussion (dholak, tabla) and melodic instruments (harmonium) coexist with modern synth textures, trap-inflected beats, and rock guitar solos. He cites his lack of formal training as liberating — "when you are too learned, you're stuck" — allowing him to follow instinct across genres. His vocal delivery favors warmth and intimacy, often mixed close to the microphone to simulate a live-room presence. Lyrically, he gravitates toward themes of longing, heartbreak, and quiet resilience, frequently collaborating with writers like Manoj Muntashir, Raj Shekhar, Kumaar, Irshad Kamil, and Amitabh Bhattacharya. He has expressed a desire to keep balancing film work — which he calls "soul-satisfying" for its narrative constraints — with independent music that offers "no traffic stops."
