Early life and dance training
Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe was born on February 6, 1993, in Lexington, Kentucky, and grew up in the Los Angeles area after her family moved west. Her name, drawn from the Shona language, is commonly translated as "We have God" or "God is with us," reflecting her father's Zimbabwean heritage. She began studying ballet, tap, and jazz at age four and competed with a dance company through her teens, a foundation that later distinguished her stagecraft. She attended Crescenta Valley High School for a year before leaving to pursue music full-time, channeling the discipline of her dance training into singing, songwriting, and eventually self-produced recording.
Screen work and the Stunners
Long before her chart career, Tinashe worked as a child performer, appearing in television and film projects that included a motion-capture role in The Polar Express, a regular part on Cartoon Network's Out of Jimmy's Head, and a recurring role on Two and a Half Men. From 2007 to 2011 she sang in the Stunners, a girl group assembled by singer Vitamin C that signed to Columbia Records and later opened dates on Justin Bieber's My World Tour.
When the Stunners disbanded in 2011, she bought recording gear, taught herself to engineer and mix with help from online tutorials, and began building the self-sufficient habits that would define her later career. Early solo videos and free downloads, including a cover of Lil Wayne's "How to Love" and the original song "Can't Say No," introduced a do-it-it-yourself approach she has kept ever since.
Home studio, mixtapes, and RCA
Writing and recording in her bedroom, Tinashe issued a string of independent mixtapes—In Case We Die and Reverie in 2012, and Black Water in 2013—that blended alternative R&B, pop, and hip-hop production while showcasing her as a writer, producer, and video director. The visibility of those projects led to a record deal with RCA Records, announced in 2012, and to collaborations with producers including Dev Hynes, Boi-1da, and Ryan Hemsworth, plus Travis Scott's feature on the single "Vulnerable." Black Water in particular tightened her reputation as an auteur who could work beside established hitmakers without surrendering her aesthetic.
2 On and Aquarius
Her major-label breakthrough arrived in January 2014 with "2 On," a DJ Mustard-produced jam featuring ScHoolboy Q that climbed to number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single served as the lead from Aquarius, her debut studio album, which arrived in October 2014 and opened at number 17 on the Billboard 200. Aquarius gathered an eclectic cast of collaborators, among them ASAP Rocky on "Pretend," and signalled her ambition to braid mainstream rap and R&B with artier electronic textures. Singles such as "All Hands on Deck" extended the album's run into 2015, while a national television debut at the BET Awards pre-show widened her audience.
Nightride, Joyride, and a label exit
The follow-up period tested her patience with the major-label machine. Nightride, a darker companion project released in November 2016 as a digital album and short film, preceded Joyride, her third studio album, which finally appeared in April 2018 and debuted at number 58 on the Billboard 200. Between albums she toured as a support act for Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry, joined Maroon 5 on the road, and kept a parallel profile in television, including a stint on Dancing with the Stars and the lead role of Mimi Marquez in Fox's Rent: Live. Frustrated by delays and creative friction, she amicably parted ways with RCA in early 2019.
Independence: Songs for You through BB/Ang3l
Leaving the label reset her career. Tinashe signed a management deal with Roc Nation in November 2019 and, days later, self-released Songs for You, which critics greeted as a confident declaration of independence. She kept building without a major-label safety net: the surprise holiday EP Comfort & Joy arrived in 2020, the album 333 followed in 2021 alongside a headline tour, and a guest spot on Calvin Harris's "New to You" widened her reach in 2022. After a turn in the reality series Stars on Mars, she issued BB/Ang3l in September 2023 through Ricky Reed's Nice Life Recording Company and her own Tinashe Music imprint, the opening move of a planned trilogy.
Nasty, Quantum Baby, and a second wind
The trilogy's second chapter, Quantum Baby, arrived in August 2024, but the era belonged to its lead single, "Nasty." Written with Ricky Reed and produced with Zack Sekoff, the slinky track was released in April 2024 to coincide with Tinashe's Coachella debut, then caught fire when a fan edit paired it with a dance clip by British creator Nate Di Winer. "Nasty" became her first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 61, and BBC News reported that TikTok named it the United Kingdom's song of the summer for 2024 and the second-biggest globally. Critics repeatedly ranked it among the year's best songs, and MTV nominated it for Best Trending Video at the 2024 Video Music Awards.
No Broke Boys and the road to Popstar
Touring behind Quantum Baby on the 2024–2025 Match My Freak: World Tour, Tinashe stayed productive. The Disco Lines remix of "No Broke Boys," released in June 2025, became her first number one on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and returned her to the Hot 100's top 40. She previewed new music in a Coachella DJ set in April 2026 before releasing "Too Easy" in June, then announced Popstar in July 2026 alongside the single "Crash Out." Issued through Nice Life, Atlantic, and Tinashe Music, Popstar is scheduled for September 25, 2026, with further singles in "Melatonin," "Pillow Fight," and "I'd Rather Be Alone." She is also slated to perform material from the album at the All Things Go festival around release weekend.
