Biography
Early life and training
Sonu Nigam was born on 30 July 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana, to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam. His father hailed from Agra and his mother from Garhwal. He began singing at the age of four, joining his father on stage for a rendition of Mohammed Rafi's 'Kya Hua Tera Wada', and later accompanied him to weddings and singing engagements as he grew up.
To prepare for a film career he trained in Hindustani classical music with Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. At nineteen he moved to Mumbai with his father, arriving in a Hindi film industry then dominated by established playback voices. He has two sisters; one, Teesha Nigam, is also a professional singer.
Beginnings and breakthrough in the 1990s
Nigam's earliest recorded film song is generally dated to Aaja Meri Jaan in 1983, but sustained recognition arrived later. The television serial song 'Hum To Chhaila Ban Gaye' from Talaash (1992) brought him to wider attention, followed by 'Accha Sila Diya' from Bewafa Sanam and a series of non-film albums issued on established Indian labels.
Two 1997 releases consolidated his position: 'Sandese Aate Hai' from Border and 'Yeh Dil Deewana' from Pardes. His album Deewana, issued in 1999, extended his popularity beyond film soundtracks. In the same period, from 1995 to 2000, he hosted the television music show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, which made him a familiar face as well as a familiar voice.
In 1996 he sang his first Kannada film song, 'Yello Yaro Hego' from Jeevanadhi, composed by Koti with lyrics by R. N. Jayagopal. Kannada became a second major film industry for him, and his Kannada work has since grown into a substantial body of recordings alongside his Hindi career.
Peak years and major awards
The early 2000s marked Nigam's commercial peak in Hindi cinema. Songs such as 'Panchi Nadiya Pawan Ke' from Refugee, 'Suraj Hua Maddham' and 'You Are My Soniya' from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and 'Tanhayee' from Dil Chahta Hai showed his range from romantic balladry to intimate, conversational phrasing.
The title track of Kal Ho Naa Ho became his best-known award-winning performance, earning the National Film Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Times of India also lists a Filmfare win for Saathiya and IIFA Best Male Playback Singer awards for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Saathiya, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Agneepath.
He also pursued non-film projects during these years, including tribute recordings for his musical idol Mohammed Rafi such as Rafi Resurrected, and performed in concerts outside India as his audience widened across diaspora communities.
Versatility, television and live performance
Nigam's repertoire spans classical and semi-classical forms, ghazals, qawwali, Sufi and devotional music, pop and rock, and he has recorded in more than three dozen languages, with Hindi and Kannada predominating in his film work. Non-film albums have included Hindu and Islamic devotional releases as well as Buddhist projects.
Television has been a parallel track. After hosting Sa Re Ga Ma Pa he judged Indian Idol in its first two seasons, worked on Chhote Ustaad and X Factor India, and returned to Indian Idol later in the 2010s. He has also hosted editions of the Mirchi Music Awards across several years.
Contemporaries have often described him as a model of technical control. Lata Mangeshkar publicly praised his classical grounding and seriousness about music, and younger singers including Armaan Malik and Ankit Tiwari have cited him as an influence on their own work.
Later career and recent activity
From 2011 Nigam worked on several cross-border projects, including a remix of Britney Spears' 'I Wanna Go', the Michael Jackson tribute 'This Is It' with Jermaine Jackson performed at an IIFA ceremony, and 'Indian Levels', a 2012 remix of Avicii's 'Levels'. He later worked with producer Kshmr on 'Underwater' in 2017.
As a music director his credits include Sooper Se Ooper and Singh Saab The Great (2013) and Jal (2014), whose background score with Bickram Ghosh was listed among preliminary considerations for the Academy Award for Best Original Score. He launched his own label, I Believe Music, in 2020.
He received the Padma Shri in 2022. In 2024 he sang for the stage production Humare Ram and released songs associated with the Ram Mandir inauguration period. In 2026 he appeared on Chaar Diwaari's 'Iss Tarah', released his first Hindi-Haryanvi single 'Chunni' with Renuka Panwar, and toured North America on The Revolution Tour 2026.
His public identity has also been the subject of legal proceedings. In August 2026 the Bombay High Court recorded a settlement in his intellectual property suit over unauthorized use of his name and likeness by a namesake on social media, disposing of the case on agreed terms.
