Biography
Sayeed Quadri: The Poet of Longing in Hindi Cinema
Early Life and Struggle
Sayeed Quadri was born on 3 October 1960 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into a family with literary inclinations. He began writing poetry as early as eighth grade, drawn to the expressive possibilities of Urdu and Hindi verse. In 1986, armed with ambition but few connections, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a career as a Bollywood lyricist. The industry proved impenetrable; after nearly seven years without a breakthrough, he returned to Jodhpur and worked as a Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) agent for a decade, writing poetry privately while supporting his family. This period of professional displacement later informed the themes of waiting, emptiness, and eventual return that permeate his film songs.
Quadri's second attempt at Mumbai came in the early 2000s, when filmmaker Pooja Bhatt offered him Jism (2003) after hearing his work. The film's soundtrack, composed by M. M. Keeravani, featured Quadri's "Awarapan Banjarapan" — a song whose title would later name both his poetry collection and the 2007 film Awarapan. The track's success announced a lyricist who could merge classical poetic forms with the rhythmic demands of commercial Hindi film music.
The Vishesh Films Era and the Emraan Hashmi Collaborations
Following Jism, Quadri became a fixture at Vishesh Films, the production house run by Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt. He wrote for Saaya and Paap (both 2003) before Murder (2004) became a cultural phenomenon. The film's four songs — "Bheege Honth Tere," "Kaho Na Kaho," "Zindagi Iss Tarah," and "Jaana Tere Mein" — dominated radio and early digital charts for months. "Bheege Honth Tere," sung by Kunal Ganjawala to Anu Malik's composition, won Quadri the IIFA Award for Best Lyrics in 2005 and the Stardust Award for Best Lyrics the same year.
The Murder soundtrack established a template: Quadri's lyrics, often set to Pritam's or Mithoon's compositions and sung by KK or Kunal Ganjawala, picturised on Emraan Hashmi. This constellation of collaborators — Quadri, Hashmi, Pritam, Mithoon, KK — produced a run of hits through Gangster (2006: "Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai," "Ya Ali"), Awarapan (2007: "Tera Mera Rishta," "To Phir Aao," "Maula Mere Maula"), Jannat (2008: "Zara Sa," "Door Na Ja"), Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009), and Murder 2 (2011). Quadri has described Hashmi's on-screen persona — the restless, morally ambiguous anti-hero — as mirroring his own struggles during his years away from the film industry.
Range Beyond the Bhatt Camp
While the Vishesh Films partnership defined his most prolific period, Quadri worked across the industry. He wrote all songs for The Train (2007) and Showbiz (2007), contributed to Life in a... Metro (2007) with "In Dino" and "Baatein Kuch Ankahee Si," and penned tracks for diverse films including Billu (2009), Tum Mile (2009), Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (2011), and the animated feature Delhi Safari (2012). His lyrics for Barfi! (2012), particularly "Ala Barfi" and "Phir Le Aaya Dil," showcased a playful, whimsical register distinct from his usual intensity, earning a Mirchi Music Awards nomination for Album of the Year.
In the 2010s, Quadri adapted to shifting musical trends without losing his poetic core. He wrote for the thriller Khamoshiyan (2015), the romantic drama Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015), the social comedy Ki & Ka (2016), and the action film Baaghi 2 (2018). The 2020s brought renewed visibility: the title track of Khuda Haafiz (2020), three songs in Anurag Basu's ensemble Ludo (2020) including the widely streamed "Hardum Humdum," and the complete soundtrack of Gadar 2 (2023) — six songs composed by Mithoon that became ubiquitous during the film's record-breaking theatrical run. His recent work includes Vanvaas (2024) and the upcoming Awarapan 2 and Ikka (both 2026).
Poetry, Publication, and Personal Philosophy
Quadri's identity as a poet precedes and exceeds his film career. In 2018, he published Awarapan, a collection of nazms and ghazals written over decades. The launch, attended by Mahesh Bhatt, Mukesh Bhatt, Mithoon, Jubin Nautiyal, Darshan Raval, and other industry figures, celebrated a body of work Quadri describes as "an expression of his Awargi or Awarapan" — terms denoting wandering, rootlessness, and spiritual restlessness. The poems explore themes of separation, divine longing, and the interior life of the migrant artist, reflecting his own trajectory from small-town Rajasthan to the film industry's margins and eventually its center.
In interviews, Quadri emphasizes honesty and emotional truth over technical cleverness. Speaking to Hindustan Times in 2026 about recreating his own songs for Awarapan 2, he said: "I never recreate what others create... for the first time, I am working on a song I wrote. That's why I did it. And besides, this film is actually very close to me, very connected to my life." He has acknowledged the pressure of living up to audience expectations for beloved catalog songs, stating his goal is simply that "my listener and my well-wisher shouldn't be thinking what he has written." Quadri lives in Mumbai with his wife Reena; they have a son, Nayaan, and two daughters, Aabshar and Kaynat.
