Biography
From Mississauga to OVO: the making of PARTYNEXTDOOR
Early life and first steps
Jahron Anthony Brathwaite was born on July 3, 1993, in Mississauga, Ontario, to a Jamaican mother and a Trinidadian father. He sang in his church choir alongside his mother, an experience he has described as the root of his musicianship, and he began producing beats in his bedroom while attending Applewood Heights Secondary School. Long before the records, he imagined himself as a featured singer, and the church harmony he absorbed there continues to surface in the stacked vocal arrangements of his later work.
As a teenager he posted songs under the name Jahron B. and, at 16, dropped out of school to move to Los Angeles in pursuit of a career, supported at first by a manager while his mother sent grocery money. At 18 he signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell as a songwriter, a foothold he would later build on with his own venture. Those years of writing for other artists taught him the craft he now mostly performs alone: writing, producing, recording and mixing in his own setup rather than in shared studios.
The OVO Sound breakthrough
Brathwaite's demos reached OVO co-founder Oliver El-Khatib through producer Boi-1da in early 2013, and the label's team, including Drake and Noah "40" Shebib, responded quickly. He became the first recording artist signed to OVO Sound that year, announcing the deal by posting the track "Make a Mil" on the OVO blog. El-Khatib later described him to The Fader as a rare artist who writes, produces, engineers and performs, controlling his records from start to finish.
His self-titled mixtape followed on July 1, 2013, drawing strong reviews and charting on Billboard's Heatseekers and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums listings. He also sang background vocals on "Own It" and "Come Thru" from Drake's Nothing Was the Same, establishing the reciprocal creative relationship that has shaped much of his career. In a 2015 cover story, his first extensive interview, he explained that he records most of his music alone, holding his own microphone, a habit he has carried ever since.
Debut album and songwriting breakout
PartyNextDoor Two arrived on July 30, 2014, led by "Recognize" featuring Drake; the album debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200, and "Recognize" has since been certified quadruple platinum in the United States. The four-song PNDColours EP followed that December, extending the early run of short projects that made him a fixture of Toronto's OVO orbit even as his output remained deliberately unhurried.
Behind the scenes, Brathwaite produced "Legend," "Preach" and "Wednesday Night Interlude" on Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late (2015), then traveled to Rihanna's Malibu writing camp, where he helped shape "Work," a nine-week Billboard Hot 100 number one released in January 2016 that became his first chart-topping cut as a songwriter. He also co-wrote and produced DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" (2017), a number two hit, and his reference tracks for both songs circulated widely among fans, reinforcing his reputation as a first-call writer for pop's biggest voices.
PartyNextDoor 3 and a widening reputation
"Come and See Me," released in March 2016 with Drake, gave him his first Billboard Hot 100 entry as a lead artist and yielded his first Grammy nomination, for best R&B song. PartyNextDoor 3 followed on August 12, 2016, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 and delivering further Hot 100 singles with "Not Nice." The album remains his highest-charting solo studio release of the decade.
The 2016 Summer's Over Tour with Jeremih and a 2017–18 supporting slot on Halsey's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour kept him on the road between projects, while the surprise EPs Colours 2 (June 2017) and Seven Days (September 2017) extended the album era. His vocal contribution to Kanye West's "Ghost Town" (2018) reached number 16 on the Hot 100, his highest-charting appearance on that all-genre list. He also established his own joint publishing venture with Warner Chappell that year, turning the songwriter's foothold he had taken at 18 into a company that signs and supports other writers.
Partymobile, Partypack and the return
Following a break from lead-artist releases, he returned in December 2019 with "The News" and "Loyal," the latter featuring Drake and later remixed with Bad Bunny. Partymobile was announced in early 2020 through Pitchfork and released on March 27, 2020 through OVO Sound, eventually reaching number eight on the Billboard 200. Its single "Believe It," made with Rihanna, later reached the Hot 100's top 40.
In October 2020 he surprise-released Partypack, a seven-song collection of previously unavailable material, and in January 2021 he finally issued his 2014 Colours EP to streaming services. A guest verse on Drake's For All the Dogs ("Members Only," 2023) and a viral resurgence of "Her Way" reintroduced his catalogue to a new audience, while a 2024 Billboard cover story captured him describing an artist less interested in fame than in releasing music on his own terms: "I'm not worried about the fame."
PartyNextDoor 4, touring and Some Sexy Songs 4 U
Singles through 2023 and 2024 — "Her Old Friends," "Resentment," "Real Woman" and "Lose My Mind" — paved the way for PartyNextDoor 4, released on April 26, 2024 as a guest-free, fourteen-track set. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 10 with 37,000 equivalent units in its first week, and it has since been certified gold by the RIAA in the United States and gold by Music Canada.
He supported the record with the Sorry, I'm Outside tour across Canada and the United States, later extending it to the United Kingdom and Europe, after years of playing only occasional festivals and college shows. In February 2025 he and Drake released Some Sexy Songs 4 U, their first full collaborative album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and on Canada's albums chart, his first chart-topping full length in either market.
The pair backed the record with singles including "Gimme a Hug," "Nokia," "Somebody Loves Me" and "Die Trying," and in 2025 PartyNextDoor collected three American Music Awards nominations. In 2026 he reissued PartyNextDoor 3 for its tenth anniversary, adding three previously unreleased songs — "Some of Your Love," "Routine Rouge" and "You Made It" — which his official site is currently promoting alongside his catalogue.
Artistry, influence and business
PARTYNEXTDOOR's sound fuses alternative R&B with trap production, dancehall rhythms and patois-inflected delivery, all typically pitched through Auto-Tune. He has cited Jodeci, Boyz II Men, Blackstreet, 112 and NSYNC as early influences, and he writes, produces, records and often engineers his own records without the formal studio apprenticeship common to most R&B careers. In early interviews he rejected comparisons that cast him as purely a dark or moody artist, insisting his palette runs from shadow to romance and that he builds songs from lived experience rather than invention.
That self-sufficiency extends to his business interests: in 2016 he co-founded JA Publishing Group with Warner Chappell, which houses a roster of writers and producers. In interviews he has described himself as private rather than mysterious, preferring to let releases speak for themselves, and he has spoken openly about working with meticulous patience — spending months on mixes and traveling repeatedly to Toronto to finish records with collaborators. The result is a career that has moved from background vocalist and in-demand songwriter to headliner and label founder while remaining anchored in the OVO Sound ecosystem he helped launch.
