Biography

From Atlanta studios to the Billboard 200 summit

Atlanta beginnings

Dominique Armani Jones is born on December 3, 1994, and grows up in the Oakland City neighborhood of southwest Atlanta, raised by his mother with two sisters. He attends Booker T. Washington High School but leaves in the ninth grade, and by his mid-teens he is earning money on the streets rather than in classrooms. Young Thug and Gunna come up out of the same circles, and Quality Control co-founder Coach K later remembers watching a seventeen-year-old who already had the style and citywide standing that Atlanta rap rewards.

As a teenager, Jones is a familiar presence at Quality Control Music, the Atlanta label founded by Coach K and Pee Thomas, though he arrives as a bystander, not a performer. Both executives press him to rap. Following a prison term that ends in 2016, he takes the advice seriously, returning to the studio soon after release, struggling at first to finish a complete song, and committing fully to recording in early 2017.

Learning to rap

Working with Young Thug and Gunna, Jones shapes a melodic, autotuned drawl suited to the piano-led trap production that dominates late-2010s Atlanta. His debut mixtape, Perfect Timing, appears in April 2017 with guests including Lil Yachty, Young Thug, and Gunna. The project introduces a writer who frames street detail without theatrical exaggeration, a quality Rolling Stone later highlights when it casts him as a synthesist of his city's sound.

The release pace that follows is relentless. Harder Than Hard arrives in August 2017, and its lead single, My Dawg, becomes a Hot 100 hit. The collaborative 2 The Hard Way with Marlo follows in October, and Too Hard closes the year in December, led by Freestyle. Quality Control figures describe the stretch as six projects in eighteen months, a saturation strategy that builds an audience faster than any single album cycle could.

Harder Than Ever and the Gunna partnership

Lil Baby's debut studio album, Harder Than Ever, is released in May 2018 through Quality Control with Motown and Capitol and enters the Billboard 200 at number three. Its single Yes Indeed, featuring Drake, climbs to number six on the Hot 100 and provides a major national co-sign. Around the same period he launches 4 Pockets Full, the imprint later restructured as Glass Window Entertainment, signaling early that his career would include ownership alongside recording.

That October he and Gunna release Drip Harder, whose single Drip Too Hard peaks at number four on the Hot 100 and later earns Diamond certification from the RIAA. The song receives a nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 62nd Grammy Awards, his first Grammy recognition. The solo mixtape Street Gossip then reaches number two on the Billboard 200, and in 2019 Lil Baby wins Best New Artist at the BET Awards.

My Turn and a defining year

My Turn, released on February 28, 2020, debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 with 197,000 equivalent album units. A deluxe edition in May returns it to number one, and the album spends five weeks in the top spot across the year. Twelve songs from the set chart on the Hot 100 at the same time, and the record sustains heavy streaming well beyond its release window.

In June 2020, as protests follow the killing of George Floyd, Lil Baby releases The Bigger Picture, which enters the Hot 100 at number three and collects nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 63rd Grammy Awards. He performs the song at the 2021 ceremony. Apple Music later names him global Artist of the Year, and My Turn is recognized as the leading album in the United States for 2020.

Chart-topping partnerships and milestones

Momentum carries into 2021. Wants and Needs, his collaboration with Drake, debuts at number two on the Hot 100 in March, and in June he and Lil Durk release The Voice of the Heroes, which opens at number one on the Billboard 200. Later that year his guest turn on Kanye West and the Weeknd's Hurricane wins Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 64th Grammy Awards, his first Grammy win.

It's Only Me, his third solo album, opens at number one in October 2022 and produces three Hot 100 top-ten singles: California Breeze, Forever featuring Fridayy, and Real Spill. The documentary Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2022 and later streams on Amazon Prime Video. A detention in Paris in July 2021 over cannabis possession ends with a fine, a legal episode reported at the time.

Glass Window, WHAM, and recent work

In 2023 Lil Baby relaunches his label as Glass Window Entertainment, an imprint of Motown and Capitol that signs frequent collaborators 42 Dugg and Rylo Rodriguez. Singles such as Go Hard and the Central Cee collaboration Band4Band, which reaches number 18 on the Hot 100, bridge the gap to his next album. WHAM arrives on January 3, 2025, and debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 with 140,000 equivalent units, his fourth consecutive chart-topping release.

He follows WHAM with The Leaks, issued on his birthday, December 3, 2025, and continues issuing singles into 2026, including Dead Fresh. Alongside recording, he remains closely tied to Atlanta's Quality Control circle and to the Glass Window roster, while a Grammy Award, multiple BET Awards, ASCAP's 2021 Songwriter of the Year prize, and Apple Music's 2020 Artist of the Year honor mark his standing across the industry. He also continues to perform live.
