Biography
DaBaby: from Charlotte mixtapes to Billboard No. 1s
Early life and first steps
Jonathan Lyndale Kirk was born on December 22, 1991, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he graduated from Vance High School. He later enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and studied there for two years before leaving to focus on music, a break from the path his parents had expected him to follow.
Between late 2014 and 2015, Kirk committed to rapping full time. Performing first as Baby Jesus, he self-released his debut mixtape, Nonfiction, in early 2015 and traveled to South by Southwest in Austin that spring, where he began drawing attention with intense, comic club performances despite having little prior stage experience.
Mixtapes and the major-label deal
The years that followed were prolific: the God's Work and Baby Talk series, Billion Dollar Baby, and Back on My Baby Jesus Sh!t followed in quick succession alongside festival and club dates across the South. Over time he shortened his stage name to DaBaby, concluding that Baby Jesus had become a distraction, and refined the tightly wound, aggressive rapping style that would become his signature.
His November 2018 mixtape Blank Blank, released through South Coast Music Group with a short-lived distribution arrangement involving Roc Nation, proved his breakout. Following the resulting buzz, DaBaby signed with Interscope Records in January 2019 and launched his own imprint, Billion Dollar Baby Entertainment, positioning himself for a rapid leap to the national stage.
2019 breakthrough: Baby on Baby and Kirk
Baby on Baby, DaBaby's debut studio album, arrived on March 1, 2019, through Interscope and South Coast Music Group. The project's single "Suge" entered the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2019 and reached No. 7 by that summer, his first top-ten hit, while the album climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard 200. DaBaby also appeared on XXL's 2019 Freshman Class cover and logged guest spots on singles by Post Malone, Megan Thee Stallion, Camila Cabello, Chance the Rapper, and Dreamville that same year.
Kirk, his second album, followed on September 27, 2019, and entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with 146,000 equivalent album units, according to Billboard. Named for his surname, the set's deeply personal single "Intro" addressed his father's death, and the album's other single, "Bop," extended a breakout year for DaBaby in American rap.
Blame It on Baby and the peak of "Rockstar"
Released on April 17, 2020, Blame It on Baby debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 124,000 equivalent album units, giving DaBaby his second chart-topping album in under a year and displacing The Weeknd's After Hours from the top slot. The album featured appearances from Future, Ashanti, Megan Thee Stallion, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and others.
The record's defining moment came with "Rockstar," featuring Roddy Ricch, which rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated June 8, 2020, DaBaby's first leader on that chart, and accumulated seven weeks at No. 1. A Black Lives Matter remix arrived amid the protests following George Floyd's killing, and Official Charts logged the single at No. 1 in the United Kingdom for six weeks. The song carried DaBaby into the 2021 Grammy cycle and two wins at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
Recognition and artistic profile
Critics have repeatedly noted the rhythmic snap of DaBaby's delivery. Rolling Stone's Charles Holmes described a "staccato, precise, and brutal rapping style, a syllable-crushing force" whose forward momentum can create the illusion that he begins rapping before the beat starts. His videos, built around comic characters and deadpan set pieces, amplified that persona across 2019 and 2020.
On the awards circuit, DaBaby has collected eight Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Best Rap Song nods for "Rockstar" and Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song nominations for "Suge." He won Best Male Hip Hop Artist at the 2020 BET Awards and Best New Hip-Hop Artist at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards, then earned two 2021 Billboard Music Awards when "Rockstar" took Top Rap Song and Top Streaming Song. He has not won a Grammy.
2021 remarks and festival fallout
In late July 2021, during his Rolling Loud Miami performance, DaBaby made remarks about gay men and about people living with HIV/AIDS that were widely condemned as homophobic and medically inaccurate. Artists and public figures including Elton John, Madonna, Questlove, and Dua Lipa — who had featured him on the remix of her single "Levitating" — publicly criticized the comments.
After initially defending himself, DaBaby issued apologies to the LGBTQ+ community and said he had been misinformed about HIV/AIDS. Even so, Lollapalooza, Governors Ball, Day N Vegas, Austin City Limits, and other festivals removed him from their lineups, and a brand partnership ended. The episode became a lasting reference point in industry debates about accountability, education, and inclusion in hip-hop.
Later releases and current work
DaBaby has remained a steady recording artist in the years since. He released the EP My Brother's Keeper (Long Live G) in November 2020, the single "Masterpiece" in January 2021, and appeared on the remixes of Dua Lipa's "Levitating" and Jack Harlow's "What's Poppin'," both of which his label credits with reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2022 he teamed with YoungBoy Never Broke Again for the mixtape Better Than You, which reached the top ten of the Billboard 200, and followed that September with the solo album Baby on Baby 2. The EPs Call Da Fireman, which contained the charting single "Shake Sumn," and Let's Do It arrived in 2023, and the project How TF Is This a Mixtape? appeared in 2024.
Through 2025 he previewed new material with singles including "Letter to My YN" and "Don't Insult Me," featuring Twin. In February 2026 the album Be More Grateful entered the Billboard 200 at No. 25, and the single "Pop Dat Thang" later reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Rap Songs chart — signs that DaBaby still draws chart attention more than a decade into his recording career.
Legal matters
DaBaby's public record includes several legal episodes. In November 2018 a fight inside a Huntersville, North Carolina, Walmart ended with the death of a 19-year-old man; DaBaby, the only person charged, said he had acted in self-defense. Prosecutors dropped the case against him in March 2019, and months later, in June 2019, a district court judge found him guilty of a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon connected to the incident.
In January 2020 he was arrested in Miami after a dispute with a promoter over payment for a performance, as the Charlotte Observer reported at the time. Such episodes have continued to surface in press coverage and form part of the public narrative around an artist whose career has otherwise been defined by rapid chart success and a tireless release schedule.
