Ariana Grande
Boca Raton Beginnings and Broadway
Ariana Grande-Butera was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida, and grew up singing and performing in community theater, appearing with the Fort Lauderdale Children's Theater in productions including Annie and The Wizard of Oz. A gifted mimic of classic pop divas, she sang the national anthem at sporting events as a child and trained seriously in voice.
At fifteen she was cast as cheerleader Charlotte in the Broadway musical 13, making her professional debut in 2008 and earning a National Youth Theatre Association Award commendation. The role pulled her toward Los Angeles, where television auditions soon outweighed homework.
Nickelodeon Stardom and a Pop Debut
Cast as the sweetly dim Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon's Victorious in 2010, Grande became a teen-favorite fixture, continuing the role opposite Jennette McCurdy on the spin-off Sam & Cat. Viewers noticed the voice beneath the red wig, and clips of her impressions and vocal runs circulated widely online.

Sweetener, executive-produced largely by Pharrell Williams and Max Martin, arrived in August 2018 behind “no tears left to cry” and gave Grande her first Grammy when it won Best Pop Vocal Album in February 2019. Months earlier, personal turmoil, including the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and the end of her engagement, had fed directly into her next project.
thank u, next, written quickly and released just six months after Sweetener in February 2019, became a cultural moment as much as an album. Its title track and “7 rings” each spent weeks atop the Hot 100, and when “break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored” debuted at number three, Grande became the first artist since the Beatles to hold the chart's top three spots in the same week. The album also received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
Positions, “Rain on Me,” and Arena Headlining
Positions, released in October 2020, leaned into R&B textures and became her fifth number-one album on the Billboard 200. That same year she joined Lady Gaga for “Rain on Me,” a dance-floor anthem born from mutual support that won the 2021 Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Grande's live stature peaked with her 2019 Coachella headline set, which made her the youngest woman ever billed atop the festival, and with a run of sold-out arena tours. She also broadened into media ventures, coaching on The Voice and building the R.E.M. Beauty cosmetics brand launched in 2021.
Glinda: Wicked on Screen
Cast as Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba in Jon M. Chu's film adaptation of Wicked, announced in November 2021, Grande treated the part as the culmination of lifelong fandom for the musical and for Oz lore. Wicked opened in November 2024 to blockbuster results, and her comic timing and retooled soprano on numbers like “Popular” drew widespread praise.
Awards followed: Grande received Best Supporting Actress nominations at the Golden Globes and the 97th Academy Awards. Grande returned to music in March 2024 with eternal sunshine, a conceptually loose album inspired in part by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Led by the house-flavored “yes, and?” and the Max Martin-assisted “we can't be friends (wait for your love),” both Hot 100 number ones, the record debuted atop the Billboard 200 as her sixth chart-topping album.
The March 2025 deluxe edition, eternal sunshine deluxe: brighter days ahead, appended six songs, among them “twilight zone” and the closing confessional “Hampstead,” and arrived with a nearly half-hour short film reviving her Peaches character from the album's video universe. Together they framed one of pop's most consistent hitmakers at her most self-directed, balancing film stardom with an increasingly authorial discography.
