Biography
Early life and musical roots
Austin Agustín Santos was born on December 23, 1985, in New York City to Dominican parents and grew up in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Music ran in the family: his mother, Carmen Rosa, sang with the merengue group Las Chicas del Can. As a teenager he circulated a breakbeat CD of reggaetón material called Planet Reggaeton, an early calling card that put him in orbit around the island's emerging scene and around artists such as Tego Calderón, whose delivery left a mark on his own.
By his late teens Arcángel was recording under the stage name he would make famous, entering the reggaetón underground just as the genre was moving from neighborhood clubs toward commercial radio — a shift that would shape the next two decades of his career.
Arcángel & De la Ghetto
In 2004 Arcángel teamed with De la Ghetto as the duo Arcángel & De la Ghetto and signed with Baby Records. Their singles "Sangre Nueva" and "Ven Pégate," both featuring Don Omar, appeared on Don Omar's compilation Mas Flow: Los Benjamins, and "Sangre Nueva" was later reworked with Daddy Yankee, extending the song's reach.
The pairing made them one of the mid-2000s underground's most popular acts, but they split in 2007 as Arcángel pivoted to a solo career. Their recorded work remains a reference point for fans of the era's romantic-reggaetón style.
Solo breakthrough and El Fenómeno
Arcángel's solo single "Aparentemente" (2007), made with De la Ghetto, became a breakthrough and resurfaced years later when J Balvin interpolated it. "Por Qué Te Vas" similarly outlived its original cycle, returning to prominence in 2023. Around this time he launched his own label, Flow Factory.
His debut album El Fenómeno followed in 2008, preceded by the early leak of "Pa' Que la Paces Bien." The album debuted at No. 14 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and reached No. 3 on Latin Rhythm Albums, establishing Arcángel as a commercial force without a major-label co-sign. Songs such as "Chica Virtual" became staples of the genre.
In 2009 he toured Europe, an uncommon move for reggaetón acts at the time. Between 2011 and 2012 he issued a pair of mixtapes that kept his profile high during a transitional stretch for reggaetón's mainstream fortunes.
The Pina Records years
Arcángel signed with Pina Records in 2012 and released Hace Mucho Tiempo that year. Its follow-up, Sentimiento, Elegancia & Maldad (2013), marked the commercial peak of his early solo career: it became his only album to reach No. 1 on Top Latin Albums and his first entry on the Billboard 200, at No. 101.
The partnership fed Latin radio through the second half of the 2010s before Arcángel and Pina Records parted ways in 2018 — a split Billboard covered at the time — closing the most commercially decorated chapter of his recording career.
Rimas era and chart resurgence
Arcángel signed with Rimas Entertainment in 2019. That year he released "Te Esperaré" through his own imprint Flow Music, followed by the album Historias de un Capricornio. The single "Sigues Con Él" became his biggest chart hit of the era, climbing to No. 3 on Hot Latin Songs and topping both Latin Airplay and Latin Rhythm Airplay.
He expanded his catalog with the Los Favoritos series: Los Favoritos 2 (2021), a set of love and reggaetón tracks, and Los Favoritos 2.5 (2022), a companion oriented toward street rap and trap. He also recorded episode 54 of Bizarrap's Music Sessions.
Sr. Santos arrived in 2022, debuting at No. 3 on Top Latin Albums; he dedicated it to his late brother Justin Santos, who died in 2021. The album's single "La Jumpa," with Bad Bunny, reached No. 3 on Hot Latin Songs and later drew Latin GRAMMY nominations for Best Urban Fusion/Performance and Best Urban Song. Billboard named Sr. Santos among the best Latin albums of 2022.
Surgery, honors, and La 8va Maravilla
Arcángel released Papi Arca in 2024 — an album framed by a baptismal journey to the Jordan River that October — and Sr. Santos II in 2025. In spring 2025 he underwent open-heart bypass surgery after doctors found blocked arteries; he has spoken about the procedure and about getting sober, describing the music he made afterward as a sober work.
La 8va Maravilla, his eighth studio album, arrived in January 2026 on Rimas with guests including Ricky Martin, Daddy Yankee, Grupo Firme, Sech, and his son Austin San. The set's "Hoy Se Guaya" reached No. 1 on Billboard's Latin Airplay chart dated June 13, 2026.
That February, Premio Lo Nuestro presented Arcángel with its inaugural Urban Icon Award, one of a record five special prizes in the show's 38-year history; he was also nominated for Male Urban Artist of the Year. Later in 2026 he launched a world tour marking 20 years of music, opening in Spain in May with a 17-date U.S. leg beginning October 9 at Orlando's Kia Center.
