Pavement Earns RIAA Platinum for "Harness Your Hopes"

The indie rock band Pavement has earned a Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their song "Harness Your Hopes." The single was certified on November 10, 2025, for reaching 1,000,000 certified units in the United States. The achievement marks a significant and unlikely milestone for a song that was originally released as an obscure B-side decades before finding viral fame on streaming platforms.

"Harness Your Hopes" was first released in 1999 as a B-side on the Matador Records single for "Spit on a Stranger," from the band's final studio album, Terror Twilight. The track was recorded during the sessions for their previous album, 1997's Brighten the Corners, and was later included on its 2008 deluxe reissue, Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Ed. For years, the song remained a deep cut known mostly to dedicated fans; frontman Stephen Malkmus famously did not recognize the song when he heard it playing in a bakery. In the late 2010s, the track gained a massive new audience through streaming service algorithms and its popularity on TikTok, where it has been used in over 778,000 posts. This digital resurgence propelled it to become the band's most-streamed song, far surpassing their official singles from the 1990s.

Pavement formed in Stockton, California, in 1989 and became one of the most influential and defining American indie rock bands of their era. The group, consisting of Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Bob Nastanovich, and Steve West, captured the "slacker" zeitgeist of the 1990s with a sound that blended lo-fi production with intricate, melodic songwriting. While albums like 1992's Slanted & Enchanted and 1994's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain were critically revered, the band achieved only modest mainstream success during their initial run, with "Cut Your Hair" being their sole modern rock hit. The unexpected Platinum success of "Harness Your Hopes" more than two decades after the band's 1999 dissolution is a testament to their enduring influence and the unpredictable nature of music consumption in the digital age.
