The song, a blend of R&B and trap, was initially uploaded to SoundCloud, where it quickly gained viral traction, amassing over 100 million plays in less than a year. The track's narrative centers on the singer's desire to be with a woman in an unhappy relationship. Produced by Epikh Pro, the song features an interpolation of Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off" in its second verse. Following its commercial release, "Don't" became Tiller's first top 20 hit, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. It served as the lead single for his critically and commercially successful debut studio album, Trapsoul (2015).

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Bryson Vernard Tiller began his music career in 2011 with the mixtape Killer Instinct Vol. 1. The massive success of "Don't" led to a recording contract with RCA Records and established him as a key figure in the trap soul subgenre. His debut album, Trapsoul, entered the top ten of the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified triple platinum. Tiller's subsequent work continued his commercial success; his second studio album, True to Self (2017), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and his third, Anniversary (2020), peaked at number five. He has also achieved major chart success as a featured artist, notably on DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" alongside Rihanna. His self-titled fourth album, released in 2024, produced the Billboard Hot 100 top 20 single "Whatever She Wants," further cementing his status in contemporary R&B.
