Released on April 1, 2014, "Painkiller" holds a significant place in the band's history. It was the first single released following the departure of original lead singer Adam Gontier on January 9, 2013. The song officially introduced fans to new vocalist Matt Walst, the brother of bassist Brad Walst, who was confirmed as Gontier's permanent replacement on March 28, 2014. Serving as the lead single for their fifth studio album, Human (2015), "Painkiller" was noted for its aggressive sound and marked a new chapter for the group. The track became one of the band's many chart-toppers adding to their extensive list of No. 1 hits.
