Biography

Travis Scott: Raging Toward the Mainstream

Houston Origins and Production Apprenticeship

Jacques Webster grew up in the Missouri City area outside Houston, absorbing the city's chopped-and-screwed tradition and the southern rap canon that surrounded it. He began making beats and releasing mixtapes under early versions of his stage name, a blend of a beloved uncle's name and Kid Cudi's given name, Scott Mescudi, whose influence he has cited throughout his career.

His production caught industry attention quickly, leading to work within Kanye West's camp and songwriting arrangements that predated his performing fame. Dual signings to GOOD Music and Grand Hustle placed him between two influential mentors, and guest appearances across their circles seeded anticipation for his own projects well before radio knew his voice.

Mixtape Rise to Rodeo

The Owl Pharaoh and Days Before Rodeo mixtapes established the template: cavernous low end, pitched vocals, and hooks engineered for chaos. When Rodeo arrived in 2015 it converted underground momentum into commercial reality, propelled by Antidote, and its touring cycle revealed a performer whose shows functioned less like concerts than controlled riots, with crowds encouraged to rage as communal release.

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight followed in 2016 and delivered his first number-one album on the Billboard 200, while collaborations kept multiplying; SZA's Love Galore featured him on a track that later drew a Grammy nomination, and his fingerprints spread across pop and hip-hop alike as a writer, producer and curator. By the decade's midpoint he was no longer merely a rapper but a production house unto himself, with Cactus Jack Records founded in 2017 to institutionalize the operation.

Astroworld, Fortnite and Global Saturation

Astroworld, released in August 2018, fused Houston nostalgia with blockbuster ambition and became the biggest album of his career to that point. SICKO MODE, its multi-suite centerpiece with Drake, climbed to number one on the Hot 100 and stayed ubiquitous for a year, earning Grammy nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance while the album itself contended for Best Rap Album. The accompanying Wish You Were Here tour cemented his arena-headlining status.

The saturation continued into 2019 and 2020: Highest in the Room, The Scotts with Kid Cudi and Franchise each reached number one on the Hot 100, giving him a cluster of chart-toppers achieved largely outside traditional radio mechanics. In April 2020, amid pandemic lockdowns, his Astronomical concert inside Fortnite drew millions of participants across its run, a watershed moment for virtual performance that extended his reach into gaming culture.

The Cactus Jack compilation JackBoys, released in December 2019, opened at number one on the Billboard 200 in early 2020, making the collective a chart entity in its own right and burnishing the label's roster, particularly Don Toliver, whose solo ascent it accelerated.

November 5, 2021 and Its Aftermath

On November 5, 2021, during Scott's headlining set at the first night of his own Astroworld Festival at NRG Park in Houston, a crush in the crowd left ten people dead, ranging in age from nine to twenty-seven, and injured hundreds more. The disaster prompted investigations by Houston police and Harris County prosecutors and a wave of civil litigation naming Scott, promoter Live Nation and numerous other defendants.

The criminal process concluded without charges: in June 2023 a Harris County grand jury declined to indict Scott or five other individuals connected to the festival, with District Attorney Kim Ogg announcing that the grand jury found no crime occurred and no single individual criminally responsible. Civil litigation proceeded independently, and Scott, who has said he did not grasp the scale of what was happening while onstage, continued performing internationally as the cases moved through mediation.

The civil cases largely resolved through confidential settlements governed by a gag order. Nine of ten wrongful-death lawsuits were settled by May 2024, with the tenth, filed by the family of nine-year-old Ezra Blount, resolving shortly afterward before trial; Scott's publicist said at the time that he was grateful a resolution had been reached without a trial and that the agreements would promote improvements in concert safety. Hundreds of injury suits then settled ahead of a scheduled bellwether trial in October 2024, and reporting indicates the remaining consolidated proceedings have continued winding down in Harris County courts. No case arising from the festival has gone to a jury verdict.

Utopia, Circus Maximus and the Comeback Chart Run

Utopia, released in July 2023 after years of anticipation, marked his full commercial return, opening at number one on the Billboard 200 and holding the summit for weeks while every track on the album charted on the Hot 100. The Circus Maximus Tour, announced alongside a short film of the same name, carried the album through stadiums across North America, Europe, Latin America and Oceania before concluding at Eden Park in Auckland on October 31, 2024, restoring his live business at scale despite protests outside select dates.

Recognition followed the comeback. In October 2024 he received the I Am Hip Hop Award at the BET Hip Hop Awards, an honor framed around his genre-shaping influence. Days Before Rodeo, the early mixtape issued widely on streaming and vinyl, staged a remarkable chart revival by rising to number one on the Billboard 200 that September on the strength of physical sales.

JackBoys 2 and the 2025 Run

January 24, 2025 brought 4x4, a brash solo single that debuted at number one on the Hot 100, his first chart-topper since 2020 and another demonstration that his audience converts promotion into sales at extraordinary rates. The rollout tied into high-profile football programming, keeping him visible across the year's biggest media windows.

July 13, 2025 delivered JackBoys 2, the Cactus Jack compilation whose release date had been revealed only days earlier (the project itself was announced that March), featuring GloRilla, Future, Tyla, Playboi Carti and others alongside label mainstays like Don Toliver. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 dated July 26 with roughly 232,000 equivalent units, powered by the largest pure-sales week for a rap album in nearly a year, and scattered six songs onto the Hot 100. For an artist whose catalogue now doubles as a label showcase, the sequel confirmed that the Cactus Jack machine remains a commercial force entering the second half of the decade.
