The Neighbourhood's 2020 single "Devil's Advocate" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on October 30, 2025. The certification recognizes 500,000 units sold and streamed in the United States. Released via Columbia Records on August 21, 2020, the track is a notable entry in the band's rock catalog.
"Devil's Advocate" served as the third single from The Neighbourhood's fourth studio album, Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones, which was released on September 25, 2020. In an interview with Apple Music, frontman Jesse Rutherford explained the song's theme, stating it is about "that voice inside your head that is constantly reminding you of the worst things that can happen as a result of your actions." The title itself refers to the historical term *advocatus diaboli*, a former official in the Catholic Church who was tasked with arguing against a candidate's canonization to ensure the validity of the process.

Formed in Newbury Park, California, in 2011, The Neighbourhood consists of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Fried. The alternative rock group signed with Columbia Records and released their debut album, I Love You., in 2013. That album featured their breakout single "Sweater Weather," which became their sole entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 14, and saw a significant resurgence in popularity nearly a decade later. Other notable songs from the band include "Afraid," "Daddy Issues," "Softcore," and "Reflections."
