The Seattle-based indie rock group Death Cab For Cutie has received a major honor for their fourth studio album, Transatlanticism. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album Platinum on November 19, 2025, signifying 1,000,000 units sold and streamed in the United States. Released on October 6, 2003, via Barsuk Records, the album has remained a touchstone for the alternative genre and a fan favorite for over two decades.

Transatlanticism marked a pivotal moment in Death Cab For Cutie's career, solidifying their place as a definitive indie band of the 2000s. The album was the band's first to enter the Billboard 200 chart, where it peaked at number 97, and it introduced drummer Jason McGerr to the lineup. Its profile was significantly boosted by the prominent placement of its songs in the popular television series The O.C. Thematically, the album, and especially its sprawling title track, explores the emotional and physical distance of a long-distance relationship, with frontman Benjamin Gibbard chronicling the pain of being separated from a loved one by an ocean.

Formed in Bellingham, Washington, Death Cab For Cutie began in 1997 as a solo project for singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard. After his debut cassette, You Can Play These Songs with Chords, gained local traction, he formed a full band that included producer and guitarist Chris Walla. Known for Gibbard's wistful vocals and sensitive, melodic songwriting, the group built a loyal following before breaking into the mainstream. The success of Transatlanticism led to a major-label deal, followed by the even more successful album Plans in 2005 and the chart-topping Narrow Stairs in 2008. The band maintains a strong presence today, with over 1.6 million followers and more than 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and 308,000 YouTube subscribers.
