Nicki Minaj's 'Pink Friday 2' is Out, 13 Years After the Original

Nicki Minaj, the renowned rap and pop icon, celebrates her 41st birthday with the release of her long-awaited fifth studio album, 'Pink Friday 2'. This marks her first major album release since 'Queen' in 2018. The album, a 22-track compilation (the complete track list can be found below), features a host of collaborations with notable artists including DrakeAmb Lil Wayne i J. Cole. Lil Uzi Vert, Future, and others, showcasing Minaj's versatility and reach in the music industry.

The album, shrouded in secrecy until its release, has been a delightful surprise for fans and critics alike. It opens with "Are You Gone Already," sampling Billie Eilish’s 2019 hit “when the party’s over.” In a nostalgic turn, “Pink Friday Girls” incorporates Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” The collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert on “Everybody” cleverly samples Junior Senior’s 2002 hit “Move Your Feet,” while “Red Ruby Da Sleeve” draws from Lumidee’s 2003 song “Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh).”

Minaj's adeptness at blending familiar sounds with her unique rap style is evident throughout the album. It spans various genres, from the airy alt-R&B of “Fallin 4 U” to the Afrobeats-infused “Needle,” a collaboration with Drake. Hints of the album first appeared in 2020 when Minaj tweeted “PF2.” The album's title was officially announced in June 2022, with the release date being pushed back twice. Leading up to the album's December release, Minaj’s fans, known as Barbz, created “Gag City,” an AI metropolis inspired by the album’s cover.

In September 2023, Minaj hosted the MTV Video Music Awards, performing her single “Last Time I Saw You” and previewing a new track from 'Pink Friday 2', “Big Difference.” This album is a significant chapter in Minaj's career, highlighting her evolution as an artist and her continued influence in the music industry.
