"All-American Girl" was officially released as a single on December 17, 2007, serving as the second single from Underwood's album Carnival Ride, which was released on October 23, 2007. The song was co-written by Underwood herself, alongside frequent collaborators Ashley Gorley and Kelley Lovelace. It continued the chart success that defined the early stages of her post- Idol career.

Underwood rose to international fame after winning the fourth season of American Idol in 2005. Her debut album, Some Hearts (2005), became the best-selling debut album by a solo female country artist and was named the top country album of the 2000s by Billboard, driven by crossover hits like "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "Before He Cheats." Her first single, "Inside Your Heaven," made her the only solo country artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 in the 2000s. The album that featured "All-American Girl,"Carnival Ride, sold over half a million copies in its first week and won two Grammy Awards. Underwood is scheduled to return to the show that launched her career as a judge on the twenty-third season of American Idol in 2025.
