Biography

## Biography

### Newark beginnings and a gospel foundation

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, to Cissy Houston, a Grammy-winning gospel and soul singer, and John Russell Houston Jr. Raised in the Baptist faith, she joined the choir at New Hope Baptist Church at age five and made her solo debut there at twelve, singing the hymn "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah." Her mother trained her voice throughout her teenage years, while relatives including cousins Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick kept gospel and popular music at the center of family life.

Houston attended Mount Saint Dominic Academy in Caldwell, New Jersey, and graduated in 1981. She repeatedly traced her phrasing and power to the Newark church tradition, a foundation that later critics and fellow singers identified as the source of her distinctive, gospel-trained sound.

### Modeling, session work, and the Arista signing

At fourteen Houston sang backup in her mother's cabaret engagements in Manhattan, and in February 1978 she earned a standing ovation at Town Hall for a solo turn. Through the late 1970s and early 1980s she worked as a session vocalist on recordings by Michael Zager, Chaka Khan, the Neville Brothers, Lou Rawls and Material, while also modeling for Wilhelmina Models and appearing on the cover of Seventeen.

A&R representative Gerry Griffith brought Houston to the attention of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, who offered a contract after seeing her perform in New York. Houston signed with Arista in 1983, and two years of preparation followed before her self-titled debut appeared, establishing the patient, long-term partnership between singer and executive that defined her recording career.

### Chart dominance, 1985-1990

Whitney Houston, released in February 1985, spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, sold more than 13 million copies in the United States according to her official biography, and produced three consecutive Hot 100 chart-toppers: "Saving All My Love for You," "How Will I Know" and "Greatest Love of All." The first of those singles brought Houston her first Grammy Award, for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, in 1986.

Her second album, Whitney (1987), became the first album by a female artist to enter the Billboard 200 at number one and added four more United States number-one singles, completing a run of seven consecutive chart-toppers. I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990) shifted toward tougher rhythmic production and yielded two further number-one singles, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "All the Man That I Need," demonstrating her range beyond balladry.

### The Star-Spangled Banner and The Bodyguard

At Super Bowl XXV in January 1991 Houston performed "The Star-Spangled Banner," a rendition later issued as a single with proceeds directed to Gulf War troops and their families; she was elected to the American Red Cross Board of Directors that year. In November 1992 she made her film debut opposite Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard.

The film's soundtrack became the best-selling motion picture soundtrack of all time, topping the Billboard 200 for 20 weeks and winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Houston's interpretation of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" led the Hot 100 for 14 weeks and earned Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. Roles in Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996) followed with hit soundtracks; the latter became the best-selling gospel album in Billboard chart history.

### Television, world stages, and My Love Is Your Love

In November 1994 Houston headlined three concerts in South Africa, at Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, in performances her official biography describes as those of the first major Western recording artist to play the newly unified, post-apartheid nation; proceeds supported local children's charities. She played the Fairy Godmother in the 1997 television adaptation of Cinderella, which drew a large American audience and earned her production credits.

My Love Is Your Love (1998), her first studio album in eight years outside soundtrack contracts, refreshed her sound with contemporary producers and yielded "It's Not Right but It's Okay," which won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2000. A double-length greatest-hits collection followed in 2000, and in 2001 Houston renewed her agreement with Arista Records.

### A turbulent decade and the return of I Look to You

The early 2000s brought Just Whitney (2002) and the holiday set One Wish (2003) as press coverage increasingly focused on Houston's private life, including her marriage to singer Bobby Brown, which ended in divorce in 2007. Her own acknowledged struggles with substance abuse, reported in major televised interviews and later published accounts, overshadowed much of the period; she entered a rehabilitation facility in 2011.

Houston returned to the top of the Billboard 200 with I Look to You (2009), her seventh and final studio album, and toured behind it. In 2011 she began work on Sparkle, a remake of the 1982 musical in which she played the mother and served as an executive producer; the film reached theaters in August 2012.

### Death, honors, and legacy

Houston died on February 11, 2012, in Beverly Hills, California, shortly before that year's Grammy Awards ceremony. News of her death was reported worldwide, and a memorial service followed; she was 48 years old. Singers and institutions across genres paid tribute to her as a defining vocal influence of her generation.

Her legacy has been sustained by official releases and honors: induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2013, a Kevin Macdonald documentary in 2018, the 2019 single "Higher Love" with Kygo as her first posthumous Billboard Hot 100 hit, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2020, the biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody in 2022, a Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026, and the 2026 collection WH1TNEY, which gathers her eleven Hot 100 number-one singles.
