Biography

## The Oasis story

### Formation in Manchester

The band that became Oasis took shape in Manchester in 1991 out of a group called the Rain, whose players included guitarist Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, bassist Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan and drummer Tony McCarroll. Dissatisfied with their singer, Arthurs recruited school acquaintance Liam Gallagher, who suggested taking the Oasis name from an Inspiral Carpets tour poster he shared with his brother Noel; the poster listed Swindon's Oasis Leisure Centre among its venues. Oasis played their first show at the Boardwalk club in Manchester on 14 August 1991. Noel, then working as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets, watched the set and later proposed joining as lead guitarist on the condition that he become the band's sole songwriter and leader. He arrived with a stockpile of songs and imposed a stripped-back, high-volume approach - simple chords, basic rhythms and loud amplifiers - that gave the group its early sound. Through 1992 and 1993 Oasis rehearsed, gigged around Manchester and circulated the Live Demonstration demo tape while angling for a record contract.

### Creation Records and Definitely Maybe

In May 1993 Creation Records co-owner Alan McGee caught Oasis at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow and offered them a contract. Because a US deal proved difficult, the band signed worldwide with Sony, which licensed their records to Creation for the UK. 'Supersonic', issued in April 1994, reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart, and follow-ups 'Shakermaker', 'Live Forever' and 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' widened their profile; 'Live Forever' became their first top-ten single. Definitely Maybe was released on 29 August 1994, entered the UK Albums Chart at number one within a week and set a British record as the fastest-selling debut album of its time. 'Whatever', that year's Christmas single, reached number three. A punishing tour schedule and the band's excesses strained relations almost immediately: during a badly received Los Angeles show in September 1994 Noel briefly quit before being coaxed back, and the episode became part of the brothers' well-documented friction.

### Britpop's summit and Knebworth

'Some Might Say' gave Oasis their first UK number-one single in April 1995, the same month drummer Tony McCarroll left and Alan White joined. Sessions for the second album followed at Rockfield Studios near Monmouth. Through 1995 the British press turned a chart rivalry with Blur into the Battle of Britpop, a narrative that peaked in August when Blur's 'Country House' outsold Oasis's 'Roll with It' over a release week. (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, issued that October, debuted at number one and spent ten weeks at the top in total, while 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back in Anger' became two of the band's defining songs; the album also won Best British Album at the 1996 BRIT Awards. Live, Oasis headlined Earls Court, played two nights at Maine Road in Manchester in April 1996 and finished the summer with two sell-out concerts at Knebworth House, each attended by 125,000 people - at the time the largest outdoor concerts in UK history.

### Be Here Now and a changing line-up

Be Here Now followed in August 1997, led by the number-one single 'D'You Know What I Mean?' and recorded amid heavy media scrutiny at Abbey Road and Ridge Farm. Its first-week UK sales of 696,000 copies set a national record that lasted until Adele's 25 in 2015, though the album's commercial afterglow faded faster than its predecessors'. After a lower-key period that produced the B-sides collection The Masterplan in 1998, founding members Arthurs and McGuigan departed during work on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000); Gem Archer and Andy Bell replaced them, and that record became the first to feature a Liam Gallagher song, 'Little James'. Alan White left in 2003. The band's remaining studio albums - Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don't Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008) - all reached UK number one, with the final two drawing strong reviews.

### The 2009 split and solo years

The Dig Out Your Soul tour ran into the summer of 2009, and after Oasis pulled out of festival appearances in France, Noel Gallagher announced on the band's website that he had quit. His statement, issued after a backstage argument ahead of Rock en Seine near Paris, ended the group's original eighteen-year run. The remaining members carried on as Beady Eye and released two albums before splitting in 2014, while Noel formed Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Both brothers sustained solo careers through the 2010s even as speculation about an Oasis return continued year after year without result until 2024.

### Reunion, the Rock Hall and Live '27

On 27 August 2024, two days before Definitely Maybe's 30th anniversary, Oasis confirmed they would reunite; the announcement crashed the band's website and presale demand quickly absorbed the initially announced UK and Ireland dates. The Oasis Live '25 tour opened at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on 4 July 2025 and expanded to 41 shows across the UK, Ireland, North America, Asia, Australia and South America, ending in São Paulo that November. Pollstar later ranked the trek second on its 2025 worldwide tours chart. In April 2026 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named Oasis among that year's inductees, with the ceremony set for 14 November in Los Angeles. On 14 September 2026 the band announced the 38-date Oasis Live '27 tour, scheduled from Glasgow in May 2027 to four nights at Knebworth in September, with Richard Ashcroft appearing as special guest at every show.
