Biography

## Life and career

### San Pedro beginnings

Miguel Jontel Pimentel is born on October 23, 1985, and raised in San Pedro, a harbor neighborhood of Los Angeles. His mother is African American and his father is Mexican American, and his parents divorce when he is eight years old. The household runs on contrasting records: classic R&B from his mother, and funk, hip-hop, jazz, and classic rock from his father — a mixture that later defines his own music.

He writes songs by his early teens and first imagines a career in dance before turning fully to music at thirteen. In eleventh grade a friend connects him with the production company Drop Squad, and Miguel spends the rest of high school learning studio craft while preparing to seek a record deal. The guitar becomes a constant companion, and he later cites Prince, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Freddie Mercury, Donny Hathaway, and Pharrell Williams among his influences.

### Early labels and a delayed debut

A production deal with Drop Squad follows in 2000. In 2004 Miguel auditions for the group Fatty Koo but is not chosen; later that year the independent label Black Ice signs him and begins an album called Young & Free. Planned for late 2006, the record is shelved after a single, "Getcha Hands Up," and Miguel walks away determined to control how he is presented to the public.

A song titled "Sure Thing" eventually brings him a meeting with manager Mark Pitts, and in November 2007 Miguel signs with Jive Records. A breach-of-contract suit filed by Black Ice then holds up his debut for roughly two years. During the wait he writes for other artists, including work on albums by Usher and Musiq Soulchild and Jaheim's "Finding My Way Back," a nominee at the 2011 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song.

### All I Want Is You

Once the Black Ice dispute is settled, All I Want Is You is released in November 2010. It opens at No. 109 on the Billboard 200 with slim first-week numbers and little promotion as Jive nears its end, but singles "Sure Thing" and "Quickie" keep the album moving: it re-enters the chart, climbs to No. 37, and spends 45 weeks on the tally. Miguel tours as support for Usher and Trey Songz before RCA absorbs Jive — and Miguel — in 2011.

RCA's official biography later credits the debut with critical acclaim and a platinum certification, and contemporary accounts describe its slow-burn climb as the making of a sleeper hit. The record also establishes a template Miguel keeps refining: intimate songwriting, elastic falsetto, and production that refuses to sit still inside a single genre.

### Kaleidoscope Dream and the Grammy

The free Art Dealer Chic EPs of early 2012 rebuild momentum, and Kaleidoscope Dream follows that October on RCA, largely written and produced by Miguel. It enters the Billboard 200 at No. 3. Reviewing for Pitchfork, Andrew Ryce hears a voice that is both virtuosic and everyman and calls the album respectful of tradition, quietly ambitious, and deeply personal — an artist set free after a mishandled debut.

The lead single "Adorn," written and produced by Miguel, tops Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and wins the 2013 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song, with further nominations that night for Song of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album. Miguel performs the song at the ceremony with Wiz Khalifa. RCA later describes "Adorn" as spending more than 23 weeks at No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, a run it calls the longest in that chart's history.

### Wildheart, War & Leisure, and collaboration

Wildheart is released on June 30, 2015. Largely self-produced and heavy on guitar, it enters the Billboard 200 at No. 2 and earns Grammy nominations for Best Urban Contemporary Album and for "Coffee" as Best R&B Song. Writing in Billboard, Carl Wilson hears an artist caught between the loverman the public wants and the more eccentric, left-field musician he considers his true self.

War & Leisure follows on December 1, 2017, opening at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on Billboard's R&B albums chart, with "Sky Walker," featuring Travis Scott, out in front. Between albums Miguel remains a sought-after writer and guest, contributing to songs by Wale and J. Cole — "Lotus Flower Bomb" and "Power Trip" — as well as Mariah Carey, A$AP Rocky, Mac Miller, and Kygo.

### Spanish-language work and catalog revival

Miguel increasingly brings his Mexican American heritage into public view. He sings "Remember Me" as a duet with Natalia Lafourcade on the soundtrack of Pixar's Coco (2017) and performs the song at the 2018 Oscars ceremony. In April 2019 he releases Te Lo Dije, a Spanish-language EP that peaks at No. 11 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart. He also headlines the Schools Not Prisons tour across California, raising awareness of mass incarceration.

The Art Dealer Chic series resumes in 2021 with a fourth volume, and guest features continue into the early 2020s. In 2023 "Sure Thing," from the 2010 debut, goes viral on TikTok and re-enters the Billboard Hot 100's top 20 thirteen years after release, renewing mainstream attention on his catalog while he prepares what will become his next album.

### Caos and the years ahead

Miguel releases Caos on October 23, 2025, his 40th birthday, marking his fifth studio album. In a Recording Academy interview he describes an eight-year process of personal change — including divorce and fatherhood — that trades the glossy sensuality of earlier records for slower, rawer reflection across twelve tracks. The Associated Press reports that he wrote every song and handled the bulk of production with Ray Brady, with George Clinton as the album's lone featured guest.

In the same interview Miguel says a supporting tour is due to begin in February and sketches plans to direct energy and resources toward left-of-center Black, brown, and Latino artists who need development and capital. He also notes work as an executive producer on the documentary Papa Melissa, signaling a career that now extends beyond the recording studio.
