Biography

## Mark Ronson: biography

### London beginnings and New York upbringing

Mark Daniel Ronson was born on 4 September 1975 in London. His father worked as a music manager and publisher, and his mother's later marriage to Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones brought a professional rock musician into the household. Ronson is raised in a Conservative Jewish family and has described himself from an early age as consumed by records and radio.

When Ronson is eight years old the family moves to New York City, and he grows up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Still a teenager, he talks his way into an internship at Rolling Stone magazine. He attends the Collegiate School, then studies at Vassar College and New York University, all while becoming a familiar figure on the city's club circuit as a DJ through the early 1990s.

### From club DJ to record producer

Ronson's DJ sets refuse rigid genre boundaries, mixing hip-hop with soul, pop and funk, and that eclecticism becomes the signature of his later production work. A set catches the attention of Nikka Costa's manager, which leads Ronson to produce her song Everybody Got Their Something and, shortly afterward, to sign with Elektra Records. Commercial advertising work, including projects tied to Tommy Hilfiger, has already given him studio experience.

By the mid-2000s Ronson is in demand as a producer and remixer, contributing to records by Lily Allen and Christina Aguilera and, decisively, to Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. Across his catalogue he favours live-sounding rhythm sections, brass and vintage warmth set against contemporary pop songwriting, an approach that connects his solo albums with his production for other artists.

### Here Comes the Fuzz and Allido Records

Ronson's debut album, Here Comes the Fuzz, is released in 2003 with guest appearances from Mos Def, Jack White, Sean Paul, Nappy Roots and Rivers Cuomo. The lead single Ooh Wee reaches number 15 on the UK Singles Chart and is licensed to films including Honey, but the album sells poorly by the label's standards, and Elektra drops Ronson roughly two weeks after release.

Rather than step back, Ronson co-founds Allido Records in 2004 as an imprint of Sony BMG's J Records alongside his longtime manager Rich Kleiman. The label becomes a vehicle for developing artists such as the rapper Wale while Ronson rebuilds his own recording career. The setback establishes a pattern that runs through his later work: protecting the conditions under which music is released.

### Version, Back to Black and the Grammy breakthrough

After signing with Columbia Records, Ronson releases Version in 2007, a covers album refracted through Motown- and brass-heavy arrangements. Stop Me, featuring Daniel Merriweather, and Valerie, featuring Amy Winehouse, both reach number two on the UK Singles Chart, and Version itself peaks at number two on the UK Albums Chart. In early 2008 Ronson wins the BRIT Award for British Male Solo Artist.

His role as lead producer on Winehouse's Back to Black proves even more consequential. At the 50th Grammy Awards he takes Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, together with Record of the Year for Rehab and Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black, awards shared on the latter two with Winehouse. Those wins make him a first-call producer for major vocalists while he continues to release and tour his own music.

### Record Collection, Uptown Special and Uptown Funk

Record Collection, issued in 2010 under the billing Mark Ronson & The Business Intl., matches Version's number two peak in the UK and widens his cast of collaborators to include Q-Tip, MNDR and Kyle Falconer. The period also carries him into film work: he scores the 2011 comedy Arthur and takes part in the documentary Re:GENERATION Music Project.

The defining commercial peak arrives with Uptown Funk, his 2014 single with Bruno Mars on vocals. It gives Ronson his first number one on the UK Official Singles Chart in December 2014 and later spends fourteen weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Its parent album, Uptown Special, reaches number one in the UK and number five on the Billboard 200, and in January 2015 Ronson tops the UK singles and albums charts in the same week.

At the 58th Grammy Awards he collects Record of the Year for Uptown Funk and Best Pop Vocal Album for Uptown Special, and he performs Uptown Funk with Mars during the Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show in February 2016. The single had already won the BRIT Award for British Single of the Year in 2015, consolidating his position as a hitmaking producer who also commands the chart as an artist.

### Shallow, Silk City and Late Night Feelings

In 2018 Ronson founds Zelig Records, a Columbia Records imprint whose first signing is the singer King Princess, and forms the duo Silk City with fellow producer Diplo; their single Electricity, featuring Dua Lipa, later wins the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. In the same period he co-writes Shallow with Lady Gaga, Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando for the film A Star Is Born. The song wins an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, plus a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Ronson's fifth album, Late Night Feelings, arrives in 2019, led by the single Nothing Breaks Like a Heart featuring Miley Cyrus. Around the same stretch he executive produces Lady Gaga's album Joanne and produces Queens of the Stone Age's Villains, so the decade closes with his credits appearing across mainstream pop, rock and film projects simultaneously. He continues to balance these outside productions with his own artist releases.

### Barbie, Night People and the 2026 BRIT Award

In 2023 Ronson is announced as executive producer of Barbie the Album for Greta Gerwig's film. He co-writes and co-produces songs including Dance the Night and I'm Just Ken with his regular partner Andrew Wyatt, and the two co-write the film's score. The soundtrack wins Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 66th Grammy Awards and collects further nominations across song and score categories.

His memoir, Night People: How to Be a DJ in '90s New York City, is published by Grand Central Publishing on 16 September 2025 and recounts his formative years in the city's club scene. On 28 February 2026, at the BRIT Awards' Manchester home of Co-op Live, Ronson receives the Outstanding Contribution to Music award and performs a career-spanning medley that brings back collaborators including Dua Lipa and Ghostface Killah alongside Amy Winehouse's band.
