Biography

## Luis Fonsi: From San Juan to Global Stage

### Early Life and Musical Foundations

Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero was born on April 15, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the eldest child of Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia López-Cepero. He grew up alongside two younger siblings, Jean Rodríguez — who also pursued a singing career — and Tatiana Rodríguez. As a child, Fonsi idolized the members of Menudo, the famed Puerto Rican boy band, and sang with the San Juan Children's Choir. At age ten, his family relocated to Orlando, Florida, where he attended Westridge Middle School and Dr. Phillips High School. During high school he participated in an a cappella group called "The Big Guys," whose members included future *NSYNC singer Joey Fatone, beginning a lifelong friendship.

Fonsi's vocal talent earned him a full scholarship to Florida State University's School of Music in 1995, where he majored in vocal performance, joined the Florida State University Singers, and performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He left university before completing his degree after receiving a recording contract offer from Universal Music Latin Entertainment, a decision that launched his professional career.

### Early Albums and Latin American Breakthrough

Fonsi's debut album "Comenzaré" arrived in 1998, reaching number 11 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and producing singles such as "Si Tú Quisieras" and "Perdóname." The record established his romantic ballad style across Puerto Rico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, and Venezuela. His 2000 sophomore effort "Eterno" deepened his commercial foothold, and that year he duetted with Christina Aguilera on "Si No Te Hubiera Conocido" for her Spanish-language debut "Mi Reflejo." Fonsi also performed at the Great Jubilee Concert for a Debt-Free World in Rome before Pope John Paul II, and at a White House event honoring victims of the September 11 attacks.

In 2002, Fonsi opened for Britney Spears on her Dream Within a Dream Tour across the United States and Mexico, and released the English-language album "Fight the Feeling" with the single "Secret" featuring Joey Fatone. The 2003 album "Abrazar la vida" brought the number-one Latin hit "¿Quién Te Dijo Eso?" and expanded his audience into Europe. His 2005 release "Paso a Paso" debuted atop the Top Latin Albums chart, driven by the chart-topping single "Nada Es Para Siempre," which earned a Latin Grammy nomination. By the mid-2000s, Fonsi had become a consistent presence on Latin radio and a headlining touring artist.

### Critical Peak with "Palabras del Silencio" and Artistic Expansion

Released in August 2008, "Palabras del Silencio" debuted at number one on Top Latin Albums and marked Fonsi's first entry on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 with "No Me Doy por Vencido," which peaked at number 92 and spent 21 weeks at number one on Hot Latin Songs. The track was later named Billboard's Latin Pop Song of the Decade. The album's second single, "Aquí Estoy Yo" featuring Aleks Syntek, Noel Schajris, and David Bisbal, won Song of the Year at the 10th Latin Grammy Awards in November 2009. That December, Fonsi performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo honoring President Barack Obama.

The 2011 album "Tierra Firme" and 2014's "8" — recorded at Kensaltown Studios and mastered at Abbey Road under producer Martin Terefe — maintained his chart relevance, with "8" debuting at number one in over nine countries and yielding three number-one singles: "Corazón en la Maleta," "Llegaste Tú," and "Que Quieres de Mi." During this period Fonsi joined the coaching panel of The Voice Chile (2015–16), broadening his public profile beyond recording. Billboard named him "Leader of Latin Music's New Generation" in July 2011.

### "Despacito" and Global Crossover

On January 13, 2017, Fonsi released "Despacito" featuring Daddy Yankee. The reggaeton-pop fusion topped charts in nearly 50 countries. An April 2017 remix featuring Justin Bieber propelled the song to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for 16 consecutive weeks, tying Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" for the longest reign in the chart's history at that time. The music video became the most-watched in YouTube history, surpassing five billion views by April 2018 and holding the platform's all-time record until November 2020.

At the 18th Latin Grammy Awards in November 2017, "Despacito" won four awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Short Form Music Video, and Best Urban Fusion/Performance (for the Bieber remix). The track also earned five Billboard Music Awards in 2018 — Top Hot 100 Song, Top Streaming Song (Video), Top Selling Song, Top Collaboration, and Top Latin Song — making it the most-awarded Latin song in BBMA history. Three Grammy nominations followed for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Fonsi and Daddy Yankee became the first Puerto Rican artists with a U.K. number-one single since Ricky Martin's "Livin' la Vida Loca" in 1999.

### Post-"Despacito" Career and Recent Work

Capitalizing on the global spotlight, Fonsi released a string of collaborative singles: "Échame la Culpa" with Demi Lovato (November 2017), which won Song of the Year at the 2018 Latin American Music Awards; "Calypso" with Stefflon Don (June 2018); and "Imposible" with Ozuna (October 2018). His tenth studio album "Vida" arrived in February 2019, compiling these hits alongside new material. It debuted at number one on Top Latin Albums and number 18 on the Billboard 200, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

Subsequent albums "Ley de Gravedad" (March 2022) and "El Viaje" (May 2024) continued his output, with the latter receiving a 2025 Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. Fonsi has remained active on television, coaching on La Voz U.S. (2019–20, winning the 2019 season with artist Jeidimar Rijos) and La Voz Spain (2019, 2021–24, winning the 2023 season with Elsa Tortonda). In 2024 he voiced the lead in the Dominican animated film "Captain Avispa" and starred in the romantic comedy "Say a Little Prayer." He joined La Voz Kids Spain as a coach in 2026. Touring has remained constant, with the "Love + Dance World Tour" (2017–18), "Vida World Tour" (2019), and "Noche Perfecta Tour" (2022) spanning the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

### Philanthropy and Public Service

Since 2008, Fonsi has served as an ambassador for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, supporting its mission against childhood cancer. The 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards honored him with the Spirit of Hope Award for his humanitarian work. Following Hurricane Maria's devastation of Puerto Rico in September 2017 — the same month the "Despacito" video, filmed in the La Perla neighborhood, brought global attention to the island — Fonsi organized relief efforts delivering generators, water, food, clothing, and medical supplies. He enlisted celebrity friends including Ricky Martin, Chayanne, and Nicky Jam to assist. For these contributions he received the Global Gift Philanthropy Award. Through the Luis Fonsi Foundation, he has funded home construction in La Perla and continues to advocate for Puerto Rico's recovery.
