Biography

## From Louisville Basements to the Billboard Summit

### Early Years and the Louisville Scene

Jackman Thomas Harlow was born on March 13, 1998, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Maggie (née Payette), a businesswoman, and Brian Harlow. He spent his early childhood on a horse farm near Shelbyville before the family moved to Louisville's Highlands neighborhood. Harlow has described his upbringing as shaped by his mother's love of hip-hop — she played Eminem, Kanye West's Late Registration, and the Black Eyed Peas in the family minivan — and his father's preference for classic country music, a blend that later informed his melodic approach to rap.

At age 12, Harlow began recording with a Guitar Hero microphone and a laptop alongside his friend Copelan Garvey, burning CDs titled Rippin' and Rappin' to sell at Highland Middle School for $2 each. By seventh grade he had acquired a professional microphone and released his first solo mixtape, Extra Credit, under the moniker Mr. Harlow. He attended Atherton High School, where he played on the varsity soccer team and was voted both Class Clown and Most Talented by his graduating class, choosing the latter because he felt it would "age the best." Throughout high school, Harlow performed sold-out shows at Louisville venues including Mercury Ballroom, Headliners, and Haymarket Whiskey Bar, and opened for Vince Staples in March 2016.

### Independent Grind and the Generation Now Deal

Less than a month after graduating Atherton High School in June 2016, Harlow released the mixtape 18, the inaugural project on his Private Garden collective. The following year brought Gazebo, led by the single "Dark Knight," whose music video went viral on YouTube and caught the attention of DJ Drama and Don Cannon. In 2018, Harlow moved to Atlanta to pursue music full-time, working at a Chick-fil-A in the Georgia State University cafeteria while recording at Means Street Studio. That August, he officially signed to Generation Now, an Atlantic Records imprint.

His major-label debut mixtape, Loose, arrived August 17, 2018, featuring guest verses from CyHi the Prynce, K Camp, and members of his Private Garden collective. A North American tour followed, and Loose earned a Best Mixtape nomination at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. Later that year, the single "Thru the Night" featuring fellow Louisville native Bryson Tiller preceded the mixtape Confetti, which showcased a smoother, more melodic direction on tracks like "Warsaw" and "Big Chillin." By late 2019, Harlow had graduated from local curiosity to an artist with national industry momentum.

### Breakthrough: "Whats Poppin" and Debut Album

On January 21, 2020, Harlow released "Whats Poppin," produced by JetsonMade and Pooh Beatz. The song's piano-driven beat and Harlow's quotable, conversational verse — referencing fettuccine at Vincenzo's and a catchphrase hook — found immediate traction on TikTok and YouTube before crossing to radio and streaming. The original version peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. In June 2020, a remix featuring DaBaby, Tory Lanez, and Lil Wayne propelled the track to No. 2 on the Hot 100 and earned 7× platinum certification from the RIAA. That summer, Harlow was named to the XXL Freshman Class of 2020.

His debut studio album, Thats What They All Say, released December 11, 2020, debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 51,000 album-equivalent units. The record featured Lil Wayne, DaBaby, Big Sean, Lil Baby, Bryson Tiller, and Adam Levine, and included both versions of "Whats Poppin" alongside singles "Tyler Herro" (No. 34 on the Hot 100) and "Way Out" featuring Big Sean. The album received double-platinum certification and earned Harlow his first Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

### Cross-Genre Ascension: "Industry Baby" and "First Class"

Throughout 2021, Harlow focused on high-profile collaborations rather than a solo project. His verse on Lil Nas X's "Industry Baby" — co-produced by Kanye West and Take a Daytrip — became a cultural phenomenon. The track reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2021, giving Harlow his first chart-topper. Its music video, depicting a prison break led by Lil Nas X with Harlow as a charismatic accomplice, surpassed 400 million views. The collaboration earned nominations for Best Melodic Rap Performance and Album of the Year (as a featured artist on Montero) at the 64th Grammy Awards.

Harlow's second album, Come Home the Kids Miss You, arrived May 6, 2022, preceded by the single "Nail Tech" (No. 18 on the Hot 100) and the TikTok-teased "First Class." The latter interpolated Fergie's 2006 hit "Glamorous" and debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, becoming the 60th song in chart history to enter at the summit and the first hip-hop song of 2022 to reach the top spot. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 113,000 units and featured an all-star roster including Drake, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, and Lil Wayne. Harlow hosted and performed as musical guest on Saturday Night Live in October 2022, cementing his crossover status.

### Artistic Pivot: Jackman. and Acting Debut

In April 2023, Harlow surprise-released his third album, Jackman., announced just two days prior with no promotional singles or guest features. The ten-track project stripped away the radio-friendly production of its predecessor in favor of dense, confessional lyricism addressing fame, identity, and his place in hip-hop as a white rapper from Kentucky. Critics praised the album as his most mature work; it debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The cover art — Harlow shirtless in front of a dilapidated garage near his childhood middle school — became a local pilgrimage site for fans.

That same spring, Harlow made his acting debut as Jeremy in the Hulu remake of White Men Can't Jump, directed by Calmatic, taking on the role originated by Woody Harrelson. He followed this with a supporting role in the Apple TV+ heist thriller The Instigators (2023), starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. In November 2023, the standalone single "Lovin On Me" became his third Hot 100 number-one and first to top the UK Singles Chart. His fourth studio album, Monica, released March 13, 2026, on his 28th birthday, marked a stylistic shift toward late-1990s neo-soul and R&B influences.

### Hometown Roots and Philanthropy

Throughout his ascent, Harlow has maintained a visible connection to Louisville. His lyrics consistently reference local landmarks — Bardstown Road, the Highlands, River Road, Churchill Downs — and he has performed at the Kentucky Derby Festival and Forecastle Festival. In 2023, a massive banner bearing his image was installed on a downtown Louisville warehouse, unveiled at a ceremony attended by city and state officials. Harlow described the moment as surreal, reflecting on his journey from selling mixtapes in school hallways to international recognition.

He established the Jack Harlow Foundation to reinvest in Louisville nonprofits, directing donations to organizations including AMPED, the Center for Women and Families, Grace James Academy, Louisville Urban League, Metro United Way, the Muhammad Ali Center, and Louisville Ballet. In 2024, he performed two "No Place Like Home" concerts with the Louisville Orchestra under Grammy-winning conductor Teddy Abrams, blending his catalog with orchestral arrangements. Harlow has also visited his alma mater, Atherton High School, to speak with students about pursuing creative careers.
