Biography

## Ed Sheeran

### Early Life in Yorkshire and Suffolk

Edward Christopher Sheeran was born on February 17, 1991, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and raised in the market town of Framlingham in Suffolk. His father John worked as an art curator and lecturer and his mother Imogen was a jewelry designer, and both sang in a local choir, filling the family home with music. Sheeran joined that choir as a child, learned guitar at a young age, and began writing songs during primary school.

He attended Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, where he was already performing regularly and recording demos. A childhood stutter that he later credited to rapping along with Eminem's records became part of his origin story, as did the support of local musicians who let him sit in on gigs around Suffolk long before he held a record contract.

### London Busking Years and the Asylum Signing

At seventeen Sheeran moved to London and threw himself into the city's open-mic circuit, sometimes playing more than a handful of gigs in a single night and sleeping on friends' floors between shows. He self-released a string of EPs and built an audience online, where videos of his performances spread well beyond the pubs that hosted them.

The January 2011 release of the independently issued No. 5 Collaborations Project, a series of tracks pairing him with grime MCs, drew attention across the UK industry and helped lead to a signing with Asylum Records that spring. The deal capped a scrappy apprenticeship that had included street busking and an early stint couch-surfing near the London scene he had chased since school.

### “+” and the Transatlantic Breakthrough

Debut single “The A Team,” released in June 2011, reached the UK top three and earned Sheeran an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. His first full-length album, +, arrived in September 2011 and topped the UK Albums Chart, introducing “Lego House” and “You Need Me, I Don't Need You” alongside its acoustic balladry.

American audiences discovered him first through television performances and then via touring: he opened select dates for Taylor Swift on her Red Tour in 2013 and contributed “I See Fire” to The Hobbit film franchise the same year. Grammy recognition followed, with nominations for Song of the Year for “The A Team” and for Best New Artist establishing him in the United States before his commercial peak there.

### “×” and “÷”: Global Chart Dominance

Second album x (“Multiply”), released in June 2014, made Sheeran a worldwide headliner. Produced largely by Rick Rubin and Benny Blanco, it yielded “Sing,” “Don't,” and “Thinking Out Loud,” the last of which won Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in February 2016 and became a wedding-standard ballad on par with anything in modern pop.

÷ (“Divide”) arrived in March 2017 and turned ubiquity into history. “Shape of You” and “Perfect” topped singles charts across dozens of countries simultaneously, the album became the best-selling release of 2017 worldwide, and Sheeran swept the 2018 Grammys' pop categories, winning Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Shape of You.” He also co-wrote Justin Bieber's “Love Yourself,” another transatlantic number one, during this stretch.

Copyright claims shadowed his two biggest ballads, and courts on both sides of the Atlantic ruled in his favor: London's High Court cleared “Shape of You” against Sami Chokri's “Oh Why” in 2022, and a New York jury found in May 2023 that “Thinking Out Loud” did not infringe Marvin Gaye's “Let's Get It On.” The cases made him an unlikely public advocate for songwriters' creative latitude, arguments he repeated after leaving the courtroom.

### Reinvention, Loss, and the Mathematics Tour

Sheeran's later studio work alternated between maximal pop and stripped-down candor. No. 6 Collaborations Project (2019) paired him with artists across genres; = (“Equals,” 2021) delivered “Bad Habits” and “Shivers.” In 2023 he released two albums within five months, − (“Subtract”) and Autumn Variations, both created with Aaron Dessner of the National, with Subtract confronting grief over the death of close friend Jamal Edwards and health scares in his young family.

On stage, his +–=÷× (Mathematics) Tour ran from 2022 into 2025 and became one of the highest-grossing concert tours ever staged, played almost entirely solo with a loop pedal in front of stadium crowds. The run cemented his reputation for economical spectacle and kept his catalog in constant rotation on charts worldwide throughout the decade.

### “Play,” the Loop Tour, and a New Label Chapter

Announced as a return to “big pop” and the first in a planned series titled after media control symbols, Play was released on September 12, 2025, through Gingerbread Man Records — the vanity label Sheeran founded under the Warner umbrella in 2015 — together with Atlantic. Recorded partly during travels that ended in Goa, India, the album folded Persian and South Asian influences into singles such as “Azizam,” “Old Phone,” and “Sapphire,” whose video featured Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and musician Arijit Singh. It became his ninth consecutive number-one album in the UK.

The Loop Tour opened in Auckland on January 16, 2026, and mapped out Oceania, Latin American, and extensive North American stadium legs running into December 2026. Between legs came a professional earthquake: in May 2026 Sheeran announced his amicable departure from Warner Music Group after fifteen years and eight albums, writing to fans that he needed a shift professionally, and reports in July indicated a long-term deal with Interscope Records, with Warner retaining his catalog.

Outside music, Sheeran married his school friend Cherry Seaborn, with whom he has two daughters, and has directed substantial philanthropy toward children's hospice care and grassroots music education. His profile has expanded into cameo acting and soundtrack work, but the through-line remains the songwriter with an instrument and a pedal board, whether in a pub or a stadium.
