Biography

## Drake: Streaming-Era Chart Architect

### Forest Hill to Degrassi

Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto to Dennis Graham, a Memphis-born drummer, and Sandi Graham, an educator; his parents separated and he was raised primarily by his mother in the Forest Hill neighborhood, attending Jewish day schools and celebrating a bar mitzvah. His father's side kept him connected to Memphis music through family visits.

Cast at fifteen as Jimmy Brooks, a basketball player paralyzed in a school shooting, on Degrassi: The Next Generation, Drake worked steadily through eight seasons while recording music on the side, a dual life that ended once his mixtapes outgrew the daytime job.

### So Far Gone to Scorpion

Room for Improvement (2006) and Comeback Season (2007) preceded So Far Gone (2009), whose singles Best I Ever Had and Successful made him an industry priority and led to his alignment with Lil Wayne's Young Money orbit. Thank Me Later (2010) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and Take Care (2011) refined the moody, melodic template that won him his first Grammy, Best Rap Album, at the February 2013 ceremony.

Nothing Was the Same (2013) sustained the momentum, Views (2016) yielded One Dance and Hotline Bling, the latter winning both Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 2017 Grammys. Scorpion (2018) produced God's Plan and In My Feelings back-to-back, with God's Plan earning another Best Rap Song trophy in 2019 as he became one of the most-streamed artists on record.

### Building OVO Into an Institution

With longtime producer Noah 40 Shebib and manager Oliver El-Khatib, Drake founded OVO Sound in 2012, signing PARTYNEXTDOOR as its first artist and building a Toronto-centered roster and festival culture around the annual OVO Fest. The October's Very Own clothing line grew into flagship retail, and his Nocta sub-brand with Nike, launched in 2018, extended the logo into sportswear at scale.

Musically he treated albums as portfolio events: Certified Lover Boy (2021), the dance-leaning Honestly, Nevermind (2022), Her Loss with 21 Savage (2022), and For All the Dogs (2023) each opened at number one, and his feature on Future and Tems' Wait For U won Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 2023 Grammys. He had earlier withdrawn his own nominations at the 2022 ceremony, part of a long, ambivalent relationship with the Recording Academy.

### The Lamar Battle and a Landmark Defamation Fight

Kendrick Lamar's feature on Like That in March 2024 ignited a rapid-fire exchange of diss tracks between the two, culminating in Lamar's Not Like Us, which spent weeks at number one and later won five Grammys, including Record and Song of the Year, at the February 2025 ceremony.

Drake pursued rebuttal through the courts: he sued Universal Music Group in January 2025 in federal court in Manhattan, alleging the company had knowingly promoted defamatory content in Not Like Us. On October 9, 2025, Judge Jeannette A. Vargas dismissed the suit, reasoning that battle-rap rhetoric would not be understood by a reasonable listener as factual assertion; UMG welcomed the ruling, and Drake's team pledged an appeal the same day. He filed a notice of appeal on October 29, 2025, moving the case to the Second Circuit; UMG responded in March 2026, and the dispute remained unresolved as of August 2026.

### Some Sexy Songs 4 U and the ICEMAN Rollout

Some Sexy Songs 4 U, his joint album with OVO signee PARTYNEXTDOOR, arrived on Valentine's Day 2025 and debuted at number one with 246,000 equivalent units, per Billboard and Luminate, giving PARTYNEXTDOOR his first chart-topper and marking Drake's fourteenth at that date. All twenty-one of its tracks reached the Hot 100 in their opening week.

He spent mid-2025 teasing a project called ICEMAN through episodic broadcasts that premiered songs including What Did I Miss? and Which One with Central Cee, then staged a giant ice-sculpture installation in Toronto whose contents revealed a May 15, 2026, release date. On that Friday he released not one album but three: ICEMAN plus the previously unannounced HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR.

### Three Albums, Three Spots: The 2026 Takeover

On the Billboard 200 dated May 30, 2026, ICEMAN, HABIBTI, and MAID OF HONOUR debuted at numbers one, two, and three, the first time any act held the top three positions simultaneously in the chart's weekly history. ICEMAN's 463,000-unit week, driven by 462.2 million streams, was the year's biggest for an R&B and hip-hop release per Billboard, and represented Drake's fifteenth number-one album, tying Taylor Swift for the most among solo artists. ICEMAN then held the summit for a third week and, by Spotify's public counters, passed one billion streams within three.

Lead track Janice STFU opened at number one on the Hot 100 while Billboard counted a single-week record of forty-two Drake entries across the chart. Five Grammy wins and fifty-six nominations stand on his Recording Academy ledger, including a Best Melodic Rap Performance nomination for SOMEBODY LOVES ME at the February 2026 ceremony. Whatever the appeal's outcome, his fusion of sung and rapped delivery, Toronto atmosphere, and relentless release volume has shaped hip-hop's commercial grammar for fifteen years.
