Biography

## Biography

### Tampa roots and early training

Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon was born on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida, and grew up around rap: her father recorded professionally as Snatcha Da Boss, and an uncle also rapped. At Howard W. Blake High School she trained in ballet, tap, acting, cheerleading and gymnastics while also playing soccer, experiences that later fed her highly physical stage presence. She has described a Christian upbringing and has said a friend encouraged her to post music online rather than pursue the choral singing path she once planned.

She began writing poetry and rap lyrics as a teenager and was making music by 2014. In 2016 she uploaded her debut song, Girls, to SoundCloud under the name Iamdoechii, opening a run of self-released work. The same year she sold hoodies printed with the slogan Stay woke. Stay black. in protest of police brutality, an early sign of the public conviction that would later surface in interviews and on award stages.

### The independent years

Her early projects arrived without major-label support, beginning with Coven Music Session, Vol. 1 in 2019 and the self-funded debut EP Oh the Places You'll Go in 2020, a seven-song set Rolling Stone described as a mix of pop, dance and hip-hop. The EP's single Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, inspired by her reading of The Artist's Way, staged a classroom-style self-introduction that became her signature early record.

In 2021 Yucky Blucky Fruitcake went viral on TikTok, soundtracking before-and-after transformation posts and pulling label attention toward the Tampa artist. That year she released a second EP, Bra-Less, guested on Isaiah Rashad's Wat U Sed from The House Is Burning, a performance the two delivered at the BET Hip Hop Awards, and opened for SZA on tour, building momentum entirely ahead of a record deal.

### Top Dawg, Capitol, and first visibility

In March 2022 Doechii signed jointly with Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment, becoming the first female rapper on TDE. She released Persuasive, her first single through the label, that same month and appeared with Missy Elliott, Bia, David Guetta and Afrojack on Trampoline. Her third EP and major-label debut, she / her / black bitch, followed in August; Pitchfork found her rapping nimble while arguing that the project sometimes hid her personality behind displays of versatility.

A place in XXL's 2022 Freshman Class and a Push Performance of the Year nomination at the MTV VMAs for Persuasive widened her profile. In 2023 she performed on Coachella's main stage, opened Doja Cat's The Scarlet Tour and made her film acting debut in Savanah Leaf's drama Earth Mama, released by A24. The GRAMMY Museum, welcoming her for a 2024 conversation, later noted that Kendrick Lamar had co-signed her as the hardest out.

### A platinum single and a turning point

What It Is (Block Boy), released in early 2023 with Kodak Black, became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry and her first RIAA platinum-certified record. She paired it with looser, dance-leaning singles including Alter Ego with JT, while guest spots and television appearances kept her in view even as follow-up releases struggled to match the song's momentum.

Doechii later described the period as one of conflict with her label and a creative numbness. She answered by leaning into house and club music: in March 2024 she released Alter Ego with JT and DJ Miss Milan, then staged a run of weekly Swamp Sessions that fed directly into her next project and reset expectations for what her music could sound like.

### Alligator Bites Never Heal

Doechii's second mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, arrived in late August 2024 through Top Dawg and Capitol, gathering the Swamp Sessions material into a 19-track statement. Pitchfork called it her most ambitious and musically diverse release, praising a record that kept hard-hitting rap at its center while opening space for vulnerability, swamp-flavored production and satirical detours, with standouts including Nissan Altima, Boom Bap and Denial Is a River.

The mixtape debuted at No. 117 on the Billboard 200 and climbed in stages, reaching No. 14 after the Grammy ceremony. Guest verses that year on Katy Perry's I'm His, He's Mine and Tyler, the Creator's Balloon from Chromakopia kept her in circulation, and in December a choreographed Late Show with Stephen Colbert medley and an NPR Tiny Desk set drew outsized attention, setting up the breakout year that followed.

### Grammy recognition and a breakout year

At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2025, Doechii won Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal, becoming only the second solo woman to win the category, and delivered an acceptance speech urging young listeners to reject stereotypes about how they should look, sound or behave. She was also a finalist for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance for Nissan Altima, while Denial Is a River, her first unaccompanied Hot 100 entry, peaked at No. 21.

The bonus single Anxiety, officially issued in March 2025 from a 2019 recording and later added to the mixtape, rose to No. 10 on the Hot 100 for her first top-10 placement. Honors followed across the year: Outstanding New Artist at the NAACP Image Awards, Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the BET Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards for Anxiety, and Billboard's 2025 Woman of the Year, two years after its Rising Star prize.

### Artistry and public voice

Doechii raps and sings across hip-hop, R&B, pop and electronic dance music, a span she has framed as alternative hip-hop. Critics have compared her animated delivery to Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat and Missy Elliott; she has named Lauryn Hill her biggest hero and cited Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, Tyler, the Creator, Kendrick Lamar and SZA among her influences. Training in theater and dance surfaces in choreographed performances and videos that borrow from ballroom, Westerns and telenovelas.

In public life she speaks about self-worth, mental health and LGBTQ+ visibility, and she has used award stages to voice support for Black, Latino and trans communities. Collaborations continue to widen her reach, from features on the Weeknd and Playboi Carti's Timeless remix and Jennie's ExtraL to the SZA team-up Girl, Get Up, along with a guest-judge turn on RuPaul's Drag Race and headlining tours that carry her swamp-branded show to audiences worldwide.
