Biography

## Biography

### Early years in Ontario

Avril Ramona Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984, in Belleville, Ontario, and grows up in Napanee, a small town where her parents support her singing from an early age. She sings at church and at local events, performs country songs at fairs, and begins writing her own material as a teenager. Her parents buy her a microphone, guitars and other instruments and convert the family basement into a makeshift studio. At fourteen she wins a contest to share a stage with Shania Twain before a large Ottawa audience, an experience that reinforces her ambition to sing professionally.

In December 1999, manager Cliff Fabri spots her singing country covers at a bookstore in Kingston and begins circulating recordings of her performances. Those tapes lead to sessions in New York with songwriter-producer Peter Zizzo, and in 2000 an A&R representative arranges an audition for Arista Records head L.A. Reid. Reid signs the sixteen-year-old to a two-album deal, and the Canadian management firm Nettwerk helps assemble a band drawn from the country's punk scene. Lavigne leaves school to focus on making her debut record.

### Let Go and a rapid ascent

Released in June 2002, Let Go introduces Lavigne to a global audience with the singles Complicated, Sk8er Boi and I'm with You. The album reaches number two on the Billboard 200 and number one in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, and it has since been certified seven-times Platinum in the United States and diamond in Canada, with reported worldwide sales of more than sixteen million copies. Critics and fans hear a skate-punk attitude translated into mainstream pop, and the record becomes one of the defining releases of its era.

The breakthrough brings rapid recognition. At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards she is named Best New Artist, and at the 2003 JUNO Awards she takes four trophies, including Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year. The Recording Academy nominates Let Go and its singles in five categories at the 2003 Grammys, among them Best New Artist and Song of the Year for Complicated, and adds three more nominations the following year. Canadian and international ceremonies continue to cite her work through the following season.

### Chart peaks and the mainstream moment

Under My Skin, released in 2004, debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 and showcases Lavigne as a more active co-writer, working closely with Chantal Kreviazuk among other collaborators. Her third album, The Best Damn Thing (2007), opens at number one on the Billboard 200, and its lead single Girlfriend gives Lavigne her first chart-topper on the Hot 100. She records the chorus of Girlfriend in several languages for international markets, and the album's campaign is built around uptempo singles such as When You're Gone.

Beyond the charts, the Girlfriend music video becomes the first YouTube video to reach 100 million views in 2008, an early marker of how her audience was moving online. The single's success also draws a copyright lawsuit from writers who alleged similarities to a 1979 song; the case is settled in 2008, and the parties later issue a statement exonerating Lavigne and producer Dr. Luke of wrongdoing. The episode sits alongside a period of intense promotion that includes televised performances and a world tour.

### Goodbye Lullaby, illness and recovery

Lavigne's fourth album, Goodbye Lullaby (2011), and her 2013 self-titled fifth album continue her commercial run, both earning gold and multi-platinum certifications in several territories. She also writes the end-credit song Alice for Tim Burton's 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, has earlier co-written the hit Breakaway for Kelly Clarkson, and contributes the charity single Fly for the 2015 Special Olympics Summer Games. Around this period her sound broadens toward balladry and pop production even as her early catalogue keeps streaming steadily.

In the mid-2010s Lavigne is diagnosed with a severe case of Lyme disease and steps back from performing and recording to recover. She later channels that experience into the Avril Lavigne Foundation, which supports people affected by serious illness and disability, and she has served as an ambassador for the Special Olympics. Her health hiatus pauses her release schedule for several years, and it forms the backdrop to the reflective material on her sixth album.

### Head Above Water and Love Sux

Head Above Water arrives in February 2019, its title track inspired by her illness, and marks her return to full-length recording. For her seventh album, Love Sux (2022), Lavigne signs to Travis Barker's DTA Records and works with Barker, John Feldmann and Mod Sun, delivering her most overtly pop-punk record in years. Features with Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear and Mark Hoppus widen the record's reach, and the singles Bite Me and Love It When You Hate Me lead the campaign. A deluxe edition later adds the Yungblud collaboration I'm a Mess.

Love Sux enters the Billboard 200 top ten and the top ten in several other countries, and a twentieth-anniversary edition of Let Go follows in June 2022. Lavigne dedicates a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 31, 2022, is inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2023, the year she collects her tenth JUNO Award, and is appointed to the Order of Canada in 2024. A sold-out European and United Kingdom leg closes out the Love Sux touring cycle in 2023.

### Greatest hits, festivals and lasting influence

A greatest-hits collection and accompanying North American tour follow in 2024, taking Lavigne back to major festival stages. In late June 2024 she makes her Glastonbury debut on the Other Stage, performing material from Let Go alongside later hits and telling the BBC it has taken her twenty-two years to play the festival. BBC reporting describes the set as drawing one of the biggest crowds The Other Stage has ever seen, and she tells the broadcaster that she still loves performing songs from her debut.

Lavigne remains active as a recording artist and touring performer, and her early work is routinely cited by a later generation of pop and pop-punk musicians, among them Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish. Journalists and broadcasters still frame her 2002 debut as a turning point for female-driven, punk-inflected pop, and she continues to present herself as a songwriter first, drawing on adolescent experience with an accent on direct, hook-driven writing. Anniversary reissues and compilation releases keep that catalogue circulating through her official site.
